Hey Ardent, why are you trading Winchesters for Kimbers?

Hi Ardent, I've read enough of your posts to know you like controlled round feed rifles. I just noticed you're trading/selling some Winchesters and the only trade you want is Kimbers. I haven't brought myself to be a Kimber fan yet so I'm wondering what drives your desire?

I like the Montana fine and the Mountain Ascent has its own appeal mostly chamber options. I've heard stories of different stainless rifles not being equal in weather resistance and I could imagine that being a factor in your guiding area. What else is there? Reliability? Ease of field stripping? Simplicity of trigger or safety?

Just a curious gun nut,

Willy

Kimbers have a three position safety just like the Winchesters.

I've had one of the newer style Winchester Model 70 in 7mm-08 REM and I've played around with the Kimber Montana. In my view, the Kimber is lighter while still keeping the controlled round feed (CRF) and three position wing safety. I'm personally not a big fan of the hidden sandwiched recoil lug (similar to the Remington 700 style) on the Kimber, but otherwise they are nice rifles. For the price, the Montana versions are a good buy when you can get them on sale around $1k.
If I had a need for a lightweight rifle I'd certainly look close at a Kimber Montana.

Where the heck have you seen a Montana on sale for $1000?

Light weight for mountain lugging... stainless for the fresh, salty air... 3P so the thumb remembers where to go when the heat is on...

This is new to me.

Afraid the truth is dull and not exciting; I have lots of guns, too many. Presently have more Winchesters than Kimbers (3), as I appreciate the value they offer. Actually, in my eyes the Model 70 is the best value at its price point. However, as double gun and hoyt point out Kimbers are lighter, and that means everything for what I need guns to do.

So the answer is, I have more Winchesters than I need and find myself carrying and shooting my Kimbers, because of how much I have to carry on a hunt. Been dancing with Kimbers since 2001 or so and they're likely my favourite rifle from an off the shelf perspective.

So, yea... Winchesters are still great. So are Kimbers.

Need a Kimber in 338 Win Mag?

I'm too sceered to shoot it! :)

6 lbs 13 ounces plus 1 lb scope and mag full of .338, I would not be too worried.

A .338 win kimber is what dreams are made of.

I didn't realize how much lighter the Montana is than your average M70 or Ruger(what I've been packing since the kids stole my 7-08mtn rifle).

So what caliber Kimber do you find yourself packing the most?.... While you wait for your Satterlee ;-)
