Hi... and now for a question.

I have been lurking for a little while on the forums and decided to be social for a change :)

I'm in the processes of getting my PAL and PALR, currently waiting on getting my papers back from my course and then sending them in etc.

My situation is a little bit unique in that I had grown up with firearms including rifle, pistol, black powder and a bit of hunting with my father. I just never got around to getting my licence until now. I now stand to come into possesion of my fathers equipment (safe, reloading gear, cleaning equip, shooting equip and some fire arms) I am kicking my self for not doing this years ago as my Dad has slowly sold off a moderate collection :(

Now to my question, thanks for your patience: I'm in the Barrie area (about 20 minutes south, Alliston). I need to get a club membership to do anything with the restricted firearms.

My choices at this time are a bit limited. I have base borden right next door but their range appears to be open only a few days a month, no in-door pistol.

The next is the Barrie club (where I did my courses recently) and I really like their facilities. They are a bit pricey at $375/year BUT and it's a big BUT, you can never shoot alone  I have no one around who shoots, nor do I want to rely on a friend to tag along all the time. I have heard there is talk at their club of having a range officer on site as sufficient but it's no official.

My last choice is the Sharon Gun Club. It is about an hour away, similar price, no in-door pistol but a good variety of ranges up to 300yd. It also appears from reading the website that you can shoot as an individual :D However there is a requirement to buy a $1000 share  That is not going to get past the wifes budget.

So are there any choices I'm missing? Are there any members of the Barrie club on here that can give me some feedback? Lastly I really am glad I found a Canadian site for firearms related talk.

Cheers,

I can't help with the club (I'm in Nova Scotia), but welcome to the site.

Welcome to the forum. Being out in BC I can not help you with your question, but I understand trying to get things by the wife's budget. Good Luck with that or get her hooked on shooting.

Thanks guys for the welcome. It has taken me literally a decade or more to convince her to even have firearms in the house, my next decade will be spent trying to get her to the range :D

Is there not an Alliston club?

Edit.............yes there is, in fact they are an IPSC club.

I forgott to mention that one. It is more of a last resort. Not becuase it looks like a bad club but because it is only for pistol, shotgun and .22 rifles. I believe the range is only 25-50 yds. I will be aquiring a few handguns and a shotgun but would also love to be able to do some plinking with the SKS or Enfield .303 as well (though .303 and plinking don't always go together). Eventually work on some long rang benchrest shooting.

It may however be my best option for the first year or two as I get my feet wet. I tend to get a little excited about all the posibilities at clubs with IPSC setups + 100-300yd ranges for rifle + indoor range :D

I really need to figure out what I'm going to focus on I guess? Though after reading through some posts here I can see several members have gun vaults over-flowing due to the same problem ;)

Matty, have you tried Target Sports in Stouffville? I haven't shot there yet -- next weekend's road trip, lol -- but that plus joining ORA at Borden might get you both the indoor short/outdoor long combo you're looking for.

And yes, definitely get your wife into shooting. My hubby bought me my OWN gun locker for my birthday. :)
