HiCal vs G9/A

Yeah, they look very similar, though for the extra bucks they better have something they can say about the superiority of their design. But either way copies or not there could still be one that works better. Also, I guess the G9/A is a copy of the US version, it is authorized however. Presumably that means royalties, and they are still coming in at 75% of the price. I'll pay more for a better product though (presumably the original parts are better), but 10 shots has it's utility.

Pepperpopper I will avoid commenting on this other than to clear up some possible misconceptions.

Our version of the G9 is an authorized copy but made here in Canada.

We have deliberately set the price low in order to assist the original designer in protecting his product here in Canada, and this lower price should not be taken as any indication of lower quality. We have made some subtle but (we believe) important changes to the original design.

I will leave it to other posters to make direct comparisons between the products.

I'm pretty sure HiCal stole the design so I would guess they are the same.

Before Claiming he stole the design you should do your homework,i made that conversion before G9 was on market, and i didnt scream on internet that he stole my idea.

Has anyone handled both? Owns both? Which is better?

We have done a lot of testing prior to releasing our adapter & we already have a Gen 2 version of our Hical SKS - AR adapters. We have also sold hundreds of our adapters, they all function flawlessly & are proven to be 100% reliable. We also sell completed SKSs with conversion already done, for those who lack the skills, time or tools to do their own conversion. By the way, the original inventor was Canadian, not an American....

Here is our adapter in a function test:

Stole the design ???

I think this Canadian guy came up with the design before the fella in Texas ....

If you scroll down in comments you'll see Marcus ( 1mlt AKA:the Texas dude ) asking him about the design of his mag catch. Which I guess he then patented and claimed as his own ....

So nobody has actually tried both out, and has an opinion on which is best. Materials, install, finish, ease of use, ruggedness, fit of mags, etc.. I'm sorta thinking I might buy both, but I'm sure someone has already done that, or at least seen them.

So did you ever get a chance to compare the two kits ?

I installed a Hical mag adaptor back in August ( because it was the only one available in Canada at the time ) and have run hundreds of rounds through it, very happy with the product. Dave at Hical was also very helpful with the "how to" aspect. It was nice being able to drop in to the store and speak directly to the guy who installs them, thumbs up on customer service !

When you get your adaptor I'd be interested in seeing some installation pics !

I have a G/9 from texas, installed it, and was pretty unhappy with it. The mags were binding on the back of the mag well, and wouldn't drop free without considerable grinding and filing to the mag catch area of the sks as well as fitting to the front of the mag well of the G/9. The design calls for mods to the mags which is in the legal grey area. The mag catch is an abomination, and routinely jams, preventing the mag from releasing. I found that dropping the mag required two hands, one to hold the gun and press the release the other to rip the mag out. ranger plates would be necessary for actual use.
In use, shoot/reload changes were faster with duckbill mags, even over the increased capacity of the LAR mags.
My rank: 2/10, killer idea but would not buy again.

We have sorted the mag catch issue and opened up the mag well to make inserting and releasing mags easier.

Good to hear. Was there any adjustment of the alignment between the adapter and the bolt hold open slide? The mags were binding on the top the of the slide around 1/2" from the top of the sks mag well. I would have needed to remove 1/16" of materiel from this area, which would have removed the bolt hold entirely. This was happening even though the front of the adapter well was aligned with the front of the sks well. It appeared that the G/9 positioned the mag too far back, even though the front of the wells were in line. This was on a Chinese Factory 26 sks. Are the mag mods still required?

Mag mods are something we do not do here, for fear of distressing our imperial overlords, lol.

As a result the entire installation revolves around modification to the rifle itself. You can take a stroll through my CGN sub forum if you like, I posted some good clear pics of the installation/modification process.

I am not quite clear on the issue you had with the slide or the BHO, but we did change the dimensions of the unit in order for it to work optimally with a "no mods to mag" installation, including mods to the BHO itself.

We also made a lateral cut along the bottom of the bolt in order to prevent binding on closing.

I am wondering if this is any part of the issue you experienced. I also wonder if you narrowed the bolt as this will allow the bolt to pass freely between the lips of the XCR/AR type mags.

Edit: upon re-reading your post I see it is the BHO you had trouble with. Check out my pics of the modified BHO, that might be helpful to you.

I'll wander over and have a look at what you guys are doing with the things! sounds like you solved most of the sins that the original G/9 has.

yup origional idea and design was invented by a CANADIAN boys , also through some reacherch the duckbill-less adapters were also origionally designed back in the 80's by Cobrae so who is coppying who fellas and claiming inventorship lol He also goes on his own forums and bashes other companies for their hard work and effort jmho here

I won't get into politics about who made what/ect first, I am just showing what I bought because it was local and I've gotten great support from HiCal after purchasing the adapter and getting everything sorted out to get it where it is now.

Took care of the milling on my end, just had some minor tweaks done by HiCal.

Despite the face I made at the camera I am gleaming with joy on the inside , I love this rifle setup.
