Hickok45 on the VZ 58

After buying my 11.8" CSA, Im not sure I would buy an AK even if they were to become legal tomorrow night.

I may just agree with you. I used to have a Chinese RPK and I wish like anything that I could have it back, but that being said, it wasn't half the gun either my CZ858 or CSA VZ58 is.

If they became legal once again tomorrow, I would still buy one - just because!

I'd take a VZ over an AK any day. The only reason I'd ever pick an AK over a VZ is if I were in the US and needed readily available mags and parts.

But if I were choosing between AKs and VZs in a vaccuum, I'd take the VZ without thinking twice. AKs are heavier, possibly less accurate although good enough for government work as the saying goes, the ergos suck and I hate the safety and the lack of a bolt hold open. Stovepipes are virtually impossible on a VZ and clearance drills are almost pointless. If you get a f**ked AK mag and it pukes rounds, double and triple feeds can get really nasty. FTEs can be really ugly in an AK as well and AK reliability is sufficiently overstated/mythological that people don't realize...these things happen on AKs as well and they SUCK to fix.

Damn right I'd take a VZ.

I've owned AK's and though most people swear they're the most reliable firearms ever made, you have to consider that the largest standing army in the world found them wanting in the reliability department. Take a really close look at pictures of Chinese troops armed with "Type 56" carbines and you'll notice that some of them don't look right - that's because they're Type 81's. China abandoned the AK for the more reliable Type 81. They'll sell AK's to other countries, but don't have them in front line service themselves. The Czechs never switched to the AK - if it offered any advantage they would have, they were almost certainly pressured to. As a former AK owner, put me in the Vz fan club.

Chinese AKs aren't nearly as well made as what the Warsaw Pact produced, and I would take a good AK, like my friend's plum Arsenal, over a '58 any day of the week. The AK just has so much more in the way of development, options and market size going for it.

I really like the looks of the vz58 Hickok used in his video. Too bad one with that barrel length would be restricted up here. I realize I could have one in that configuration but I am not really a fan of being confined to a range. The non-restricted cz858's with the 19" barrel just look way too long in my opinion.

Believe it or not the most popular AK in Somalia is the North Korean - they're uglier than sin, but have a really good reputation for reliability. I used to take my Chinese AK hiking and trust me options and market size mean nothing when you're trying to disassemble a loaded rifle in the p*ssing rain on the side of a hill in 60 click winds (damned rabbit - I swear it was laughing)

There was probably a good reason why the Chinese used to steal Russian AKs passing through China on the way to North Vietnam, and substitute them with Type 56s, back during the Vietnam war...

I believe Mr Kalashnikov himself judged the Bulgarian AKs to be the best, followed by the East German and the Russian.

Anyway I'd take an AK for the magazine factor alone, AK steel mags are probably the cheapest and second most rugged detachable box mags there are, milspec AK polymer mags are even tougher while managing to be slightly lighter than Vz58 aluminums.

as much as i love my VZ , i'll still love to buy the AK cos something about the AK that seams to scare the uniformed more . :D

I've been in an AR15 fog for the past six months but after watching this great video I think its time to take the old girl out for a workout! Hasn't seen daylight in a while... My first love must feel neglected:D

They look a little silly on pictures, but aren't that bad in person.

I have a CZ-858 but still want an AK. Or two.
