Higginsons offering 230 grain 303 hunting bullet

I've always wondered how these bullets would work in a Mk. II Ross throated for Mk. VI ammunition. Really should find out.

Funny- I think they also used to make a 174 gr in the Game Ranger. I may have some at home as I think I ordered some (from Marstar) a while ago but never got around to loading any.

I've asked on a couple of African hunting forums if anyone had used Frontiers and never got a reply; odd, since they are made in ZA. (frontierbullets.co.za/gameranger.htm)

They seem like a good idea, given that the flat point of the 30-30 is sometimes believed to be partly responsible for its good terminal performance.

You mean this one? :D

Ted,
Are you able to get about 2150fps with that? I kind of like the looks of it. Regards, Bill

Only Problem I see with those pills is the fact that no F&W Officer in Alberta would deem them as being expanding ammunition, actually I would hazard to say they fall in the catigory of a FMJ.

Well - They are "copper washed", so the jackets are only several thou thick. I would hazard to say they would expand quite nicely - perhaps too much in the 174 gr version. BTW - This product is also available from Marstar in both bullet weights.

Has anyone got one of these copper washed pills that I can use to show a F&W Officer, so I could get a opinion as to how they would deem them.
Would love to try them but no sense getting in a protacted legal roundy round as to wether they meet legal big game hunting bullet requirements.
Just PM me and I can arrange to have it shipped out to me.
just one bullet please.

Why not shoot theminto some medium, check expansion?

If they expand nicely, bbring one along fo rhte F&G guys on the rare occasion that they check.

No CO has ever checked my rifle ammo, ever.

Hi Bill,

A good 2000 fps is easily obtainable in the Lee-Enfields without leaning on the rifle at all. Brass lasts as well as with other sensible loads at this velocity.

I have no doubt that 2150 could be reached easily in a Pattern 14 rifle.

The big flat meplat will do more than enough at either velocity, and spoils less meat than the regular soft points, especially when bone is encountered.

We will have some pictures posted here in a bit. :D

Actually, Cosmic, the pistol bullets may be copper washed, but the rifle bullets are definitely more of a cladding than washed. A sectioned 230 gr shows the jacket to be at least 20 thou thick.

Regardless, they can be tuned up into a soft point with about three licks with a bastard cut file. Neither the trajectory or accuracy changes appreciably out to 200 meters.

I shot a few of these out of a M1909 Argentine Mauser in 7.65x53 last weekend. They shoot well, but I have some more load development to do. I could touch these off at 2200 fps in the mauser at safe pressures, but will likely stop at about 2000.

They are 0.311" and my bore is 0.312", but they still shot well. Their very long length likely compensated for being a bit undersize. The mauser's 1:10 twist easily stabilizes the long bullet. Another benefit of this particular bullet is that the throat of the M1909 is very long, so I can seat it well within the case and still be close to the lands. The 150gr Hornady is over 0.200" from the lands when seated to a minimum depth (but still shoots well).

Next to no thought seems to have gone into this bullet - it's just a flat-nosed cylinder - but it's cheap and shoots well in my gun.

I imagine a bullet of that weight would be ideal moose/bear fodder for shots typically under 100 yards, not sure of the advantage for smaller game
