High end, long range Laser ranger finder advice needed.

Jordan, you wouldnt happen to have a link to the review would you? thanks

From another forum, posted by John Barsness:

"I got one early last fall and have used it a lot since. The optics are pretty good--I'd rate them at 8.5 or 9 out of 10--and the rangefinder is superb. The first afternoon I tested it was a typical sunny day in September, about as tough as it gets for a laser RF, and it ranged a juniper tree at over 1600 yards.

I've since used it alongside folsk with much more expensive LRF binoculars. The rangefinder has always been able to range as far as any of the others, and while the optics aren't the absolute best, I haven't failed to see any game that the guys with the other binoculars have."

Then this:

"I'll just say that the rangefinder is the equal of anything I've used, and far better than most."

The wife bought me a Bushnell Arc 1000 and it rarely can range past 500yds after many frustrating attempts. Works great if you only range 3-400 yards.

I now have a Swarovski and my ranging problems have been solved. It will range anything I point it at out to 1600 or 1700 yards the FIRST TIME! I haven't ranged stuff much farther than that because I haven't had the need to. I have a tripod for my Swaro but have come to the realization that it isn't necessary to get readings.

I went the Swaro route because lots of guys were having problems with the newly released Leica 1600s and the Guide is time tested. (Oh yah, and Leica I think only has a 2 year warranty and is disposable after that)

How large are the objects your ranging? My Swaro works good, but I have to be rock steady to range even a vehicle at 1500 yards.

Vectronics, nuf said. For those who have never used one, they are everything you want in an accurate long range range finder,,, made even tougher and better. Of course, they are priced accordingly.

I have yet to use my Swaro hunting but I usually range spruce trees, hillsides rock outcrops etc (non-reflective stuff).

If you are having trouble ranging a truck at 1500 yards I would send it in for service.

Are the optics smudged or dirty and have you tried changing the battery?

Leica 1600

It's all been said before but I had the swaro, and loved it! It was a little large for my liking and the reaction time was slow compared to a leica on the same target. So when leica put out the 1600 I sold my swaro and picked up the leica with the money I received for the used swaro!

It's lighter, and smaller and for a hunter/long range shooter I was willing to sacrifice the slightly lower image quality @ distance (IMO) for the weight savings.

Both models were awesome for me with ranges on deer at 1500 + yrds.

I've changed the battery, so I know its fresh. I shoot in the mountains, so lots of ranging is done from one elevation to another. Its my opinon that a vehicle may not be "reflecting" directly back to me, perhaps the rays are going into the sky and ground. If I range on flat even ground, no problem. If I try to range from various elevations in winter with snow on the ground, or summer when lots of muddle puddles are on the ground, I can forget about getting any reliable range readings. I've learned to always backup my range finder reading with a mil-dot calculation based on my 24" target, and this helps. Still, I cant help but feel there MUST be something better. I went from a POS Leopold (small pocket size unit) to the Swaro, and this was a drastic step up, but still lacking.

Ok. Jerry can back me up. A couple summers ago a bunch if us did some long range shooting in the Okanagan. Mysticplayer and other fellow CGNers were there. Between us we had leica, bushnell and Swarovski rangefinders.

It was a very bright day and the targets didn't have much contrast. A good challenge for any laser rangefinder. We were shooting from 600 all the way out to 1600 yds.

The bushnells were obviously the weakest.

Te leica was good but couldn't range past 900yds or so due to the brightness.

The swarovski though made it all the way out to the full 1500yds and never skipped a beat.

When I buy a rangefinder I'm definitely going with a swarovski rangefinder. Hows that for practical experience?

Swaro seems to work best of the hand helds I have used to date. Out to 2000yds.

But always happy to test more

Jerry

I wanted one as a tool when I started archery hunting a few years ago.I purchased a Leupold 750 RX, thinking I could use it for range use as well.

Has a tough time getting readings on less than perfectly reflective targets. 300 or 400 yards on a treeline or something, forget it.

Works good out to 50 yards though.

I prefer the optics of the Swarovski they are bigger and have 1 times more magnification that the Leica.
The Leica is nice as it is smaller and more handy, has I believe a better readout and is faster.
The Swarovski I have ranged game at 1710 yards and my truck at 1980 yards
The Leica I have been able to range game at 1380 and my truck at 1770 yards
Without a tripod or window mount it is very difficult to range those sorts of distances.

The Newcon I was under impressed with the optical clarity with.

Been trying hard to find a Vector
