I know BR and close quarter shooting are opposites, but is there a scope that would be useful under a hundred yards for fast target aquisition, but still give magnification and adjustments to 600 yds.

It is for a 6.8 AR15.

How much are you looking to spend? If it's anywhere near 2-3k then the Schmidt & Bender ShortDot is the best there is.

Slightly cheaper would be the US Optics SN4. Multiple reticles and options are available, basically they make them to order within parameters for the model. Both scopes are a 1-4x.

Depending on how your scope will be mounted, you may want to consider buying two separate scopes.
If you have quick release type rings, it will only take a few minutes to changes scopes. Also, it might actually be cheaper to buy a specialized scope for each job than an expensive scope that will do both.
For close in work, a small lightweight scope would work best. At less than 100 yards, you would want less than 4X magnification. In fact, 1X sights such as the EOTech might do the job.
For 600 yards, you would need a scope that would go to 12X or more magnification. Such scopes are usually large and heavy.
You may get more answers to your question on the Optics forum.

Two might be better than one.

I'm thinking of getting a high quality shotgun scope for may carbine rifle. These scopes usually have a wider field of view then the norm and fairly long eye relief(3.5-4.5")........ making such scopes good for short range, quick target acquisition....... good optics for hunting in heavy bush.

S&B Short Dot -- IIRC retail is somwhere near $2400 from Wolverine
(I dont pay retail)

Of all the scopes listed its the only reasonable choice.

The new Aimpoint mount for the X3 magnifier makes that a more realistic option now as well...
