High end vs. Low end holosight...any advice?

Hey guys and gals,

I am looking to put a Holosight/Reflex sight on a rifle of mine. Now, I won't be shooting any further than 200yds at most. Most shots will be 100yds and less.

I was going to purchase a used Bushnell Holosight, but that deal fell through...as did a deal for a Meprolight 21.

I then though it over. Do I REALLY need something like an Eotech or a meprolight or trijicon? I know these guys are on top of their game but....

Could I not be just as happy with a "replica" sight like something made my NCstar or some other company?

If so, can anyone recommend any sight that they have had success with, and that they are happy with, that can withstand the 7.62X39's recoil?

Let me know! I could REALLY use your advice folks!

I mean, I can only see a Bushnell Holosight being a good option (sort of a middle ground), but they're HARD to find, discontinued, and because of that, a little overpriced. :(

So help a young guy out! I'm on a budget, but I appreciate quality!

If you buy a clone, or NCstar ANYTHING, you will be disappointed. Trust me.

Spend the money on a name brand red dot. Anything else is pointless, unless its on a .22 plinker. 7.62x39 will wreck a clone in short order.

Get a Vortex Sparc or Strikefire if you can't find a bushnell holosight.

Thanks for the advice! I had a feeling the ncstar's were crap :(

I would very much a holosight/reflex, not a tube type red dot. That's why I am avoiding the vortex or anything like the burris AR332. I want something like an eotech, holosight etc (the "window" type of sight). Maybe a Mueller Quick Shot

Thanks for the tip though!

I found a mint still in the box bushnell holosight for $150 and couldent be more happier with my find. I didnt really like the tube style red dot either, keep your eyes open and if a bushy holo shows up grab it

That's exactly the one I am hunting for....I just want to make sure I get the shorter N battery type one, not the old school bus length one lol

A friend of my had a EOtech clone on his AR and the insides fell apart while we were shooting, that sight was a replacement for another cheap red dot sight that broke, I think he has another cheap sight on right now, which will probably brake soon. Its your money, if you like spending it keep buying cheap stuff that brakes, or buy quality once and it will last you.

I purchased a NCStar (or other Chinese made copy) from another member on the EE.

It refused to hold zero and I used up all of the travel getting it on target. That being said, the 10/22 I tried it on was giving groups that looked like a pattern made by a shotgun with an open choke; no matter what optics I tried. I am currently building a brand new 10/22, and I plan to try it on that gun but I don't have high hopes.

Seeing that it is a .22 LR, I might get away with it but I doubt it would give good results with the 7.62x39.

I really wish there was a budget holosight/reflexsight out there that worked. It seems our options are $40 for ChiCom crap and $350 and up for a "decent" brand. Something like a Bushnell Banner grade of holo/reflex sight for $75-150 would find a large market I believe

Ask the two T1's, one H1, one 512, one M3 and the one ML3's that I have.

I could take my H1, and use it as a hammer to brake all your cheap optics. You just can't skimp when it comes to optics. I will shoot out all my guns before I shoot out the optics on them.

If you buy cheap, you'll spend the money twice.

You're better off waiting and saving the extra money than pulling the trigger on a lower quality optic, just to save a few bucks.

Been there, done that.

Burris is about the cheapest you should buy, New aroudn $300, the Delta Point is 450 from Frontier, site sponsor, doesn't stock them but can order them. The Trijicon is nice as it doesn't require batteries and is good for 16 years. The dot is a bit more clear than the delta point which can be blurry (its a triangle) as the light on the delta point reflects off both the front and rear lenses so may give you a double image. the delta point has no on off switch comes in 3.5 and 7 moa dot, for rifle you will want the smaller, delta point is super nice as you can buy many different pistol mounts if you ever wanted to put it on a pistol, works great for that application. Do a search for the mini aimpoints, I believe they have come out with a cheap version of the Micro and for your application it may very well be the best choice. I have the RMR, Delta point and an Aimpoint, so do have a little experience with them.

DO NOT buy anything by NC star. A shooting partner spends more time zeroing his than shooting. has to rezero every time out, costs more in ammo than it would have to buy a $1000 reflex sight.

I was going to go with a Burris AR332, however I snagged that Vortex off the EE today, so for now I will have that.... if I find it is not good enough in any way, the Burris is my next step :)

Hey folks, so thanks for all your advice. I finally got my Vortex StrikeFire in the mail today from a fellow CGNer. Awesome sight, and I am very happy.

I can finally get back to work on my custom CZ858 mount for a red dot (lowbudget). :) Once that gets done, I will share with you guys on here!

There's also a model wich the dot is a ...dot :)
It turns itself off after 5 minutes is it hasnt moved (it's motion sensitive)

Something else to consider is the Sig STS 081 red dot sight.

I have two. One is on my Fabarm shotgun and its very accurate and has been holding up to slugs thus far.
