HK SL8/243/G36 FAQ, Mods, And Info

Irunguns for magpul g36 mags. Mod each mag if you want the gun stock.

Easier just to grind out the tabs, then he can use any magazine. I did both, when grinding out the tabs, you just have to take that thing apart as much as possible, good lightening, dremel and patience. Or let a gunsmith do it.

The "problem" is that the Magpul are 30 rounder and therefore very long. But they are good. I bought quite a lot at some time from IRG and sold a bunch on gp for a profit.

Where do I get one? Who sells them?

Nobody right now, just keep monitoring the retailers. I think they are like $120 each plus tax and shipping. Sometimes they pop up on gp. Reason is that they come form HK in Europe since the Americans only have -1 and -6 and those do not fit.

Or ask your retailer to contact the importer he got it from.

My local guy from who I got the rifle told me that he can order one for me for a low price of $140! He actually was laughing himself when he looked up the price…
An update! Thanks to Irungunns, I was able to order 2 mags from them. Hope to get them soon.

Hey guys I need your help! So I got the ammo and decided to load the mag that came with the gun. After reading that only single stuck mags will fit the gun, the mag that actually came with the rifle is double stuck( as one round sits a bit offside to the one on the bottom and not directly on top, so I guess the correct description would be staggered position of the rounds)! I already ordered the extra mags from Irunguns and those are single stuck! Did I make a mistake or what? I am getting confused with the issue…Irunguns assured me that the mag will fit but I also told them that it’s a single stuck….

Rereading some of your posts, I assume that you have either a SL8-4 or -5. This should say it on the rifle very clearly. Those rifles are using double stack magazines, manifesting the fact that a double stack magazine came with the rifle, yes you are correct, the difference in loading is that in a double stack magazine, the rounds do sit staggered and not straight on top of each other.

I heard about Irunguns claim before that single stack magazines will fit. This is wrong. Assuming it is an original HK magazine for SL8. In the US you cannot buy SL8-4 and SL8-5 versions. There are some SL8-1 and 6 floating around in Canada, mostly imported by Irunguns, those are in fact using single stack magazines.

As mentioned above, the only magazine out of the US which can be modified to fit a SL8-4 and 5, are the Promag G36 magazines.

Took the baby to the range yesterday, they have a 40 yards rifle range. Took me 6 shots to sight it in! This baby can shoot! Got 3 bullet holes touching each other and two in a half an inch radius. Wow! Was using American Eagle 55 gr fmj rounds 223. Shot about 50 rounds all flawlessly. Trigger is very nice too. My buddy was shooting his new toy KD and the trigger was terrible.
Now the question is- I was reading that because of the twist rate 1:7, this gun likes heavier bullets. What are you guys shooting?
Also, what about the 5.56 rounds? The barrel is the same as on the G36 asi understand so should be able to handle the extra pressure no problem….

I'm using 69 gr in mine they are handloads and it's a tack driver no regrets buying the H&K

So just wanted to pass this info to you guys regarding 223 vs 5.56 nato. I sent an email to the US and Germany customer service of HK. Germany didn’t reply but our brothers from down south did.
They sent me a complete manual for the SL8. Their US manual is different than what I have here in Canada. Their manual actually indicates that the rifle can shoot both types of ammo. Our only refers to 223. The customer service rep also said that “ Good morning

The SL8 rifle is marked for .223, but is perfectly capable of handling 5.56x45mm ammunition. I've attached a copy of our SL8 user manual to this reply, if you look on page 15, we have the 5.56x45mm capability documented there.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

That’s right from the horses mouth…
Cheers to everyone and happy shootings!

The versions sold in Canada are European versions and anything marked 556 is considered a military rifle and prohibited in Europe. This also explains the different manuals.

The unique height over bore of the platform obviously makes a lot of popular modern optics designed for ARs unworkable. Tried an ACOG TA11 at the LGS and it was comically high.

The low height version of the Hensoldt ZO 4X30 is often considered the ideal optic for the platform given it was purpose designed for G36. They're impossible to find in North America though and looks like they're being discontinued. Put in an order from RKS in Spain a couple months ago before they completely disappear and still waiting for it to show up.

Running a Vortex Spitfire 5X Gen II in the mean time. The Spitfire's base can be removed so it's flush with the top rail at a comfortable height. Primary Arms micro prisms have a similar feature and are also a good option. A LPVO on low rings would also work well, but often look awkward.

I took the rail completely off and installed that Hera rail only to find out that you cannot put rings on it, so I put a Primary Arms simple AR mount on it with some 1-6 LPVO Vortex scope. It works.

If you disassemble the rifle you will see 5.56x45 on the lower. It is covered up by the upper and you only see Kal 223.

nice find. i'd given up on the hera rail. i had been running a dot on the front hera mount and a magnifier on the rear but found there was too much place in the front mount so went back to the oem rail. the primary arms mount seems a good option. any chance you have pics?

That's the mount. Some dealers want around $100 but I found those fellows. The mount is solid on the Hera Arms rail as long as you push it forward in the rail slot before tightening the bolt. 223 does not have much recoil.
