HK SL8/243/G36 FAQ, Mods, And Info

FYI: the SL8-4 I just bought comes with a blued REM 700 SPS looking barrel coating. The SL8-5 I bought has a phosphate barrel coating.

Both barrels are stainless steel with target crown. However the SL8-4 was from the latest batch ( just bought a week ago). The SL8-5 was from The previous batch. Different coatings. The rest seems the same.

I'm sad that they stopped chrome lining the barrel. I didnt see a difference in performance, but did want more longevity.

I’m using mine as DM rifles. So the chrome lining isn’t as big a deal. But it would be nice for longevity. Especially if you wanted a G36 or more carbine ( Hera kit etc) rifle.

Just an FYI there are 3 of these in existence that I made. I still own one and there are 2 out there

I have one! Lol. Any idea where I can order the lower components, and leave the original alone?

"Barrel Torque Spec: 90 Nm / 66 ft-lbs."

Are we sure about 66 ft-lbs. It seems excessive to me.

I've pulled 4 barrels so far and not one has caused me any strain.

I used my torque wrench on a couple and they broke free between 50 and 55 ft- lbs.

Putting them on at 66 ft-lbs felt much tighter and require way more effort.

10 round pistol mags work well?

I bought the Tommy Built magwell conversion - works a 100% with Pmags but not with metal 10 or 5 rounder mags. Looks like even with the magwell conversion the shaving inside the receiver is still necessary to fit all mags.

I have the Hera rail as well - happy with the setup.
You can fit pmags without modifying the magwell? I never bought the magwell conversion because I thought it meant that I'd have to shave the plastic posts on the inside down. If I can fit pmags without permanent modification, I might have to reconsider.

The Hera kit is certainly a budget G36 conversion option. I wouldn't describe it as bad but the Tommy Built bolt on kit is better.

The Hera kit looks a lot better after a cerakote job and if you aren't going for the purist G36 conversion it opens up a lot of options for customization.

You can use PMAGs if you dremel off the corners of the mags.

Do you know if geissele triggers can be dropped into Hera kits?
Thx
