HK416/MR223 Info Thread

soldiersystems.net/2017/12/26/usmc-fields-m38-squad-designated-marksman-rifle/

Back in May we told you that the US Marine Corps planned to field M27 Infantry Automatic Rifles Equipped with 3-9x scopes as Squad Designated Marksman Rifles. Apparently, work began not long after and units are now equipped with the rifle, designated as the M38. The Marines adopted the 5.56mm M27 in 2011 to replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in the infantry squad. The M27 is manufactured by Heckler & Koch and is based on the HK416........

Not sure if this is appropriate or not.*

Hands on experience of Marine Infantrymen who actually carried it overseas and in combat.
14minutes long. Some very interesting info.

The USMC M27 IAR first came on the scene in late 2010 when it was issued to five deploying units that would see if the new automatic rifle was to be as viable as claimed. This video will cover some of the issues with the weapon system and some of the debate surrounding it, getting into as much detail as possible on camera through the experiences of Marine Infantrymen who actually carried it overseas and in combat. Today the M27 has reached full issue within the Fleet Marine Force and Reserves, and might even be reaching a full force adoption if Marine Corps Systems Command can get the contracts and solicitations sorted.

And there's no such thing as "HK416 profile" barrel. If a country place a large enough order, H&K will make the barrels in any profile the customer wants.

There's so much misinformation out there it's not even funny.

Yup created by people that want to sell something else.

For all you guys with 416D "semi lowers" you made a good investment, LOL

Anyone know where I might find a MR223 barrel nut wrench and MR223 barrel mandrel here in Canada? I know it’s a long shot but I thought I’d ask before I import them.

The "real McCoy" is exorbitantly priced($1000), try HKPARTS, I have the "crowfoot" version of the barrel wrench and may "clone" it if I can? I've used the Geissele reaction rod from Brownells and that's good to go.

Ya I’m waiting on pricing now, if it’s too ridiculous I’ll go with HK parts wrench. I’d prefer the real deal but will see what happens.

Can you please point me to that Norinco YouTube vid? Thanks.

Here is the thing - barrel making steel is not really bloody trade secret. Going to any trade shows it is not hard to figure out where or whom to buy steel from.

But, how much can you buy? and how much do you want to pay for it? Is your country embargoed or having problems with export permit for the steel you want to buy?

Next, does your engineers know WHAT to buy and what heat treatment and stress relief need to be for the purpose? Does your shop know how to control the process from deep boring to running that hammer forger?

With KGH, the sales pitch is that A&D boasted to make the "cleanest" CrMoV steel compared to other similar products made by other steel mills. That is kinda half of it, HK probably specifies the heat treatment and stress relieve, that is something they probably will not say too much.

I posted a youtube of an interview with Norinco engineers. The biggest challenge the Chinese claims to encounter in developing precision small arms is the quality of steel as well getting consistent heat treatment and stress relieve results.

The not so deep conclusion is that, you cannot just buy AISI 4140 steel, do QPQ surface hardening on it and claim it to be as good as HK 416 barrel. The graph in the first post shows that, and the Chinese engineers at Norinco pretty much said that out loud.

Get or borrow the Giessele rail wrench - Exact same dimension for the barrel nut wrench.

Guess what, Giessele made rails for HK416 to supply to the US spec ops, and then they started making rails for AR15 to the commercial market.

It really depends how the internal of the 416D lower looks like. I have not had the chance to see one closely but.......either it is a good investment or it is a major bust. I will just put money on MR223 lowers to be on the safe side.

Is the 416 e1 stock supposed to have a slight rattle on milspec buffer tubes? I put mine on a colt canada lower and not that I was expecting magpul ubr level lockup but it has more free play than I expected. I just want to verify this is not a defective item.
