It's not a piece of crap by any means, it is just more expensive to buy, just as annoying to clean as a m16.... the m16 is more modular than a g36 that's what it has going for it, that and about 50 years of history... so you can be sure they worked out most of the bugs in the m16 design.

True kevin ,but the 416 also has little red and white bullets on the lower.....red and white bullets..on the lower..how cool is that
Seriously the AR is fine the way it is,does it need a piston ? The jury is still out on if it really makes that much more of a difference than say using a high reliability magazine.
The G36 has it's own charms,and yes some flaws but it has not had the 40 plus years of development of the AR series, in time the bugs will be hammered out,one thing though you cannot beat it's reliability and design concept. My G36C in over1K rounds has yet to have a single stoppage,of any type,I cannot in truth say that about any of my ARs or my Sig.
