I saw an article in Western Sportsman on hog hunting- seems they can be found in Alberta and Saskatchewan. There were some in BC,around Chiliwack years ago, but they obviously didn't establish a breeding nucleus.I saw them in NewZealand-and it's quite obvious where they are from the damage they do to pasture.Mainly they are nocturnal though.Somehow I don't think the KIWI prefered method of hunting them would catch on though-running with dogs then sticking them-it would pale the Canadian seal hunt into insignificance-PETA would be having fits and we'd have Pamela Anderson and the animal rights protestors blocking traffic and doing cartwheels in the streets

I have looked for them here in Alberta on solid leads and always come up empty. The ones in Alberta are all escapees from the hunting farms here where you can pay to kill one.

While running them with dogs may be common this side-mainly they use guns or bows-I haven't heard of anyone sticking them over here.My goodness-wouldn't get every animal rights group in the country up in arms...and maybe we ought to do it just to get them off our backs for bear hunting

Sticking them is pretty common too. Once the dogs have them bayed up, it's a pretty simple matter to grab them by the hind legs, leash the dogs and dispatch them however you want. Some of the good old boys just castrate them and let them go so they are better eating next time they catch them. You might be shocked what goes on in the Florida swamps and who cares what Peta thinks! Pretty sure Pamela isn't thrilled with me shooting deer either!

''pretty simple to grab them by the hind legs ''?dunno...the scars on my KIWI friends legs says otherwise-you wouldn't get ME in there trying to grab a 200 lb boar by the back legs with him squealing and spinning around trying to get his razor sharp tusk into my leg!But I admit it does up the ante in the pigs favour getting up close and personal though...

I've done it a few times and it is a rush for sure but for some of those old boys in the swamp, it's little more than Saturday evening entertainment! But yes, they all have scars as well.

You grab wild Boar by the back legs?

Pretty simple really?

If I remember correctly you have also dispached wounded big game with your knife?

Impressive!

LOL...not that impressive....I was with a bunch of good old boys that did this for entertainment. When in Rome....... The first time I did it, it seemed a bit crazy when we were crawling on our hands and knees through the palmettos to get to a small opening in the middle where three bay dogs and a catch dog had the hog bayed up. But when someone in the middle of the mayhem says grab a leg, you just do it. Once you get their hind legs off the ground, they are pretty well hooped. That and having the catch dog grabbing them by the face doesn't hurt! :D The catch dog, now he was impressive! Really wasn't that much different than branding calves.

I have driven the odd knife in the back of the skull of a wounded animal that was unable to get up or pose any danger to me...again, not that impressive.

just remember to get some thick leather chaps to wear-and wide leather collars for the dogs.More than one pig dog has had its throat ripped open by a less than docile boar.My kiwi friend's wife has sewed the calves of his legs up more than a few times-all the while telling it was his own fault for doing such a darn fool thing...

Ya, blue jeans was about it for the Florida boys....not sure I'd want to do it every Saturday but it was fun to do and I'd definitely do it again! The potential is certainly there to get hurt but I was shocked how easy they made it look.

What kind of dogs do they use in NZ? The guys in Florida were using cur hounds for bay dogs and a cur hound that was mostly pit bull for a catch dog. From what I saw, the bay dogs were much brighter than the catch dog.

Saw this on the Crocodile hunter years ago. The crazy guy needed bait for a croc they wanted to catch so he drove around and when he saw a pig he let his dog out of the truck. Once his healer had it cornered he stabbed it with his big bowie knife. Crazy stuff, I would choose to stay a spectator if I was there!

Just don't use a cheapo Leatherman to do it. I've broke the blades off 2 Waves cutting the spinal cord this way and that wasn't very impressive.
