These are fine for Deer, I had one from CT that looked like that, could've swore it was "rated" for 1200 lbs, it didn't even get a Cow Elk's shoulders off the ground and the Chinesium Pot Metal snapped. That Cow went 350 something on the hook. Maybe they backed it off to 1000lb... I wouldn't trust it for anything over about 250.

You musta got a bad one. I've hoisted a whole cow elk with my 1000lb model , 2 men on the rope to hoist it though.
I think quality wise the princess auto 500lbs model i have is probably the most cheaply made but it's lasted a long long time hoisting deer
Like any product, someone's bound to have a different experience and get a defective one.

That does not sound like a good product. For my curiosity, what "snapped" - the hoist anchor latches, the axle, the pulley frame sides - many metal parts in those - some parts can be easily replaced after failure - some parts not so easily - but what you report is a LONG way from what it was claimed to be able to do.
OP - you asked how long rope to get - sort of depends distance that you want to lift or pull - count the number of lines that are holding the load - if 4:1, should be four lines - plus some amount around pulleys - so that sort of sets the length of rope to get. No clue where I got my "game hoist" - could not hold the rope it came with, with bare hands, so I re-roped it with some 1/4" rope. In actual practice, I had a boat winch bolted to a wall stud in my garage - at least one hand lever cable "come-along" that died ( bent handle) - so I dismantled it and used the pulleys as snatch blocks - length of 1/4" cable through those pulleys - three 2x4 across exposed rafters - lifted and suspended many Saskatchewan deer with that set up - I liked that I could stop cranking on the boat winch and the load would stay where it was.

The Elk maybe weighted 500lbs whole. Front shoulders weren't even off the ground when it let go.
As I said, I could've sworn these hoists were rated for 1200lbs at the time. I think they would go on sale for $12.99 or something like that.
I still have one, I only use it for Deer though.

I was out to lean-to to find my rope hoist - have not used it for years - several mods to it.
The rope goes around four pulleys at one end and 3 pulleys at other end. Last time I used it, I used 1/4" clevis - probably got that at Peavy Mart (likely defunct store now). No clue where or when I got the "hoist" - no stickers on it anymore to show a "load rating".

i should say..... when we go on moose hunts and such , we also bring 2 heavy duty turfer jacks with steel cable for both, snatch blocks and come alongs. One of my hunting buddies also recently bought a honda portable rope winch which we have yet to try out. So we don't just rely on simple rope hoists. I just think they are handy units and everyone should have at least one squirelled away hehe
