Holder for extra cartridges - what do you use?

These work:

And if you are cheap and just want something for your pocket, these work:

This chap hunted moose with an old Remmy model 8 in 25Rem. Might want to have a flap to cover the cases so they don't scratch your walnut.;) It was the rage in the 1920's up at home anyway.

The Butler Creek magnum slings allow for four cartridges too but they really throw the ballance off if you try to shoot freehand and your elbow misses hookinght esling for an anchor point. The weight of the sling swinging back and forth a a tad frustrating.

In my opinion they make a rifle look ugly and I can't see why anyone would want one. Most rifles have a magazine with at least four extra cartridges. What in the world makes you think you need quick access to more ammunition? Many years ago I went on a day hunt and took seven cartridges so I could have two left over for my pocket. Actually, I put one in each of two pockets so they wouldn't rattle. I shot a moose that day, so thought I had found a lucky number, and most of my life I have gone out hunting with a full mag and two in the pocket.

You are not prepared if the Zombie-pocalypse strikes while you are out hunting.

I use a Bear's Tooth neoprene unit that fits over the butt stock. They are made a little better than most IMHO. They also help to protect wood stocks for taking a beating down here in the wet coast Jungle!!

I used a Butler creek "Alaskan" sling before that, it carries 4 rounds!

always just loaded the internal mag up (5) never really thought about carrying extra, but for a single shot it makes sense

side note, i think a nice leather buttstock holder looks great on a rifle.

Its not cheap, but I've always liked and wanted a cartridge trap built into the rifle RECKNAGEL makes them, and there available from NECG, but it would be custom install.

I've got the slip on neoprene pads for the butt, that are inexpensive and commonly available. As long as you don't store ammo in them (i.e - only put ammmo in them when you're actually going out hunting), they last many years and I've never lost a round out of mine.

Popcan:Mags look stupid taped to a Ruger #1

Hehe ya, but I was just agreeing with HeavenIsAlie in the previous post on mags in general, (I was assuming his was detachable) and commenting how easy it is to carry more:

For single shot/blind box, the more expensive stretchy stock shell holder from Epps in Orillia works great on my wife's rifle. Model #8848-1 9-shot Uncle Mikes.

Awww come on now H4831, I do agree that you should only need one or maybe two rounds to get the job done. But I don't think they make the gun look ugly. If the gun is ugly to begin with, what's wrong with a bit of bling eh? Besides, in my hunting situations, we usually travel way, way back on the ponies. Sometimes, we don't know where and when we'll be putting our heads down for a the night, we take it as it comes. So some extra ammo at hand's reach when you grab your rifle might just come in handy. :)

If you have a wooden stock, then leather is the way to go, it just works better. Mine was custom made by my own design (well kinda). The bullets will never fall out, the leather just hugs them nicely. I believe that crazy_davey also knows some guy in Alaska that sells them, mine is from a local saddle maker.
