It means that you have taken some form of Holster course.

There are a few options

Black Badge is required for IPSC but it is also recognized for IDPA, CDPA, PPC and SASS

The various *DPAs have their own "courses" of sorts and they vary in nature. Generally if you have taken one you can shoot them all but cannnot shoot IPSC.

PPC is yet another one and it can be used as qualification to shoot *DPA but not IPSC.

I recently did the IDPA holster course, it was significantly cheaper than the BB
It would be the way to go if you only wanted to shoot *DPA

I prefer IPSC which is why I prefer the BB course and think that it is great value for the money.

but as I am a budding instructor I am biased.

To be fair, I think the IPSC course shoots much more rounds and lasts way longer as well, justifying the higher cost.

I will probably end up getting into IPSC one day anways, and thus will be required to do the BB :) D'oh!

The cost of a BB course also includes your first years membership to IPSC Ontario...

Really? I thought you had to be a member $70, and then do the blackbadge $100 or something like that.

I think we're saying the same thing...

The cost of the BB in Ontario is $170.00

$50 for Course Fees
$50 Instrctors Fees
$70 for your first year (which is a $10 discount)

To join IDPA it cost $60.00US and none of the course cost anything unless the hosting club requires funds for use of the facility, that is up to them.

"Holster Certification" is a uniquely Canadian thing...

When I started shooting in the USA I asked about what Holster Cert. was acceptable...

"You have a holster?"

"Yup"

"Then you're certified. This here's America boy... We're born holster certified..."

The IPSC BB course isn't just about safe holster use. Any idiot can be taught that in ten minutes. The BB course is also about teaching the game of IPSC to new participants.
'Neccessary in that IPSC is probably the most rule laden shooting sport known to man.

Your American friend stretchs the truth a lot. I can think of several clubs USPSA/IDPA who now either offer or insist that new shooters take some type of instructional course before they allow them to participate at their club events. That said there are lots that don't.

Sean Hanson has posted here that a number of countries where IPSC is shot now insist or offer some form of holster/shooter training.

Take Care

Bob

I should have qualified my statement by mentioning that I'm not talking about IPSC/USPSA shooting.... There are many clubs that offer similar type shooting, but not operate on their own... Not under a national org like USPSA or IDPA or whatever.

IPSC course would be the best to take. You can shoot IPSC and IDPA. If you are only IDPA certified,..you will not likely be able to shoot IPSC.

More like not allowed to shoot IPSC. Those who are DPA certified, may not compete effectively in an IPSC environment, but they should be equal in safety. The basic premises of "holster usage" is the same, and both have pretty much the same core rules.

#1 Safety
#2 See rule #1
Everything else after that is specific to the game. Classes/equipment/rules/scoring/etc...

+1, it is a little hypocritical to allow IPSC into Defensive Pistol but not visa versa but it has always been this way and I am sure it will stay this way.

More self-serving on your part than hypocritical on ours. It's your choice to accept IPSC certified individuals; you don't have to.
You do because you know it's a source of possible new, safe recruits.
But hey - at any time - feel free to stop accepting us - we won't be hurt.

When *DPA creates a national mandatory training program that pumps out people at the same competency level as the black badge anywhere in Canada; please feel free to present it to us; we'll look at it.

Just to be clear...would that be IDPA (International) or IDPA (Independent) or ODPA, or CDPA..or what ever flavour of DPA I forgot to mention

But you do bring up a good point. Our BB courses are usually full...we generally have a waiting list. I'm all for supporting the other shooting organizations...so long as we don;t have to keep training your members ;)
