Little bit of a rant.......

5 years ago I took the Blackbadge course and paid my dues fore a couple years and enjoyed it, also enjoyed that some one deemed me "holster qualified" so I could use my holster while at the range. Unfortunately due to a severe injury(broken back) I let my IPSC membership expire while I recovered. Now that I am starting to shoot again (well was until I broke my leg last week) I can not use my Holster as I am deemed now as "not qualified".

My big problem with this is, I will never compete in IPSC again because of my injures but want to still be able to use a holster while at the range and practice.

What bugs me more then having to pay the Blackbadge course fee's again is the fact that I have been on the Ontario waiting list for a course since November of 2011 ( I even think i added I was willing to travel all across the entire province to attend a course)

Does anybody know if IDPA offers a holster training course that will allow me to holster while at the range? Is IDPA more up to my speed as far as matches go?

Sorry about the rant, just frustrated with trying to get holster qualified once again.

The BB is not a holster qualification course...if you don't intend to shoot IPSC...it's over kill. There are other alternatives (including Club Level courses)and I would suggest you find one. Perhaps you club can point you in the right direction. If they are not helping...maybe it's time to find a new club

Good luck
Q

Yeah... IPSC doesn't hold any more authority re. "holster quals" than any other org.

It's just that if you say.."I have a BB" people/clubs will assume you're trained well enough and there ya go.

As far as I'm concerned... You're trained and welcome to shoot with a holster.

If you did the course previously it should still count for a holster course.

What Club? You are certainly "holster certified" (stupid term) as you have taken the course. That is it, you have taken the course. IPSC won't recognize it now due to the time going by, because they know it is not a holster course but an IPSC course, and they don't want people who haven't shot IPSC in 5 years to be just able to show up. They want to make sure you are current on all that is IPSC.

You see? Now there is a proper fellow.

If you did the course previously it should still count for a holster course.

And it does, but not for IPSC.

Requal courses are free to members of IPSC.

I am curious however...............why should IPSC or anyone connected with IPSC work towards your goal when you will not be shooting IPSC?

As others have said it appears that your issues are with your club.

Well.... I paid to be reinstated.
'Had been away from ipsc for a few years... I had continued to shoot club level almost weekly, but in order to re-up I was required to go through a stripped down expedited version of the BB course. I didn't expect the instructor to spend his time with me for free so I don't have a problem with the fee.

fetchingdrake, the waiting list sends out alerts whenever a location you have indicated an interest in posts a course and if you are/were willing to travel maybe you should have indicated more clubs.
Secondly as others have stated, you do not pay the full fees again.
Third, did you contact the Ontario BB Training Coordinator to explain the situation?
my$0.02.

Sorry guys,

I was under the assumption that I had to re qualify to to be able to use my holster and participate at the club level.

stormbringer,

I should have be more clear, I like IPSC and still wish to shoot on a club level, just not interested in doing any competing as I am not able to move easily through the course of fire du to some mobility issues.

I was not asking IPSC to work towards my goal...(not looking for a handout)

I think i was just under the impression that I had to re qualify to use my holster....my bad.

Thanks for all the replies gentleman.

Try IDPA.
One of our guys is in his mid to late 70's and moves VERY slow but always gets 0 down (All A's in IPSC speak).
On a stage with little movement he does quite well.

do what i did shoot P.P.C get your card from the canadian police combat association its 35$ a year instead of 60-90$ a year and its a little more relaxed

And where do they give their holster course at? That's correct, they don't which is why most clubs out East don't recognize JUST membership there, they want to see other proof.

A great offer see? You may also consider Cowboy Action. Most of the good cowboys are well into their 60's.

this is my opinion, bear in mind I am the president of a large gun club in BC, holster courses are a waste of time at the club level. absolute and total waste of time. They are not required by law, nor are the what I would consider Best Practice either. In every instance I've seen they are simply used as a tool to control people and inflate egos, and often, pad the pockets of those who came up with the idea.

Do you have a club level holster course? What requirement do you have for holster use on your ranges?

There are pros and few cons to the black badge, but at least it is a widely respected qualification for holster use. Cowboy for example has no holster training or qualification system and if they did, it may help the sport to gain wider acceptance. How for example do you know if someone arriving from another club to your range is safe if they have no qualification?

Drawing from a holster is not rocket surgery! Always maintain safe muzzle direction and keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target! That's it!

We have no rules about holsters at my club. None. Zero. Zilch. We also have no problems with people using the. If we ever do one, it will not be mandatory.

I'm with Slavex on this one. I don't like the idea of mandatory holster courses, especially at club level.

Why complicate matters.
