HOLY MOLY Someone made a rendering of the 40-yard shot that took down the Indiana ma

We ran a stage at Speed Steel yesterday just to get an idea of the difficulty. The COF was 10 shots on a torso sized steel plate at 40 yards in 15 seconds, 8 out of 10 shots minimum to score, any less was a default 30 second time score. Most of our squad were able to accomplish this, we had a couple who only hit 7 out of 10. I would say the average time was around 10 seconds.
Our fastest time was a 10/10 run at 4.05 seconds, I personally ran 9/10 in 6.47 seconds.
This is obviously not the same as a food court full of people, an active shooter and I would imagine a massive adrenaline dump, but it was interesting to run anyway.
Props to the young man for his response to the situation

Were you being shot at the the same time? No ear pro and people screaming, children crying, maybe stepping into your line of fire? Target moving, probably folding down to 1/3 size, possibly to take careful aim?

Multiple reports it was a Glock, but not what model or what ammo.

I understand it was 9 mm.

I hate it when the B27’s start shooting back with rifles though. It usually brings my score down a little. Still no problem though… lol

Check.

this reminds me of the period of time where CHAS range didn't have a pistol range and I practised pistol shots on the 50 m steel plates. Developed some very nice skills by being forced to shoot at ranges longer than average pistol range.

Now we have to practice pistol shots at 100m there.. I'm getting to a point when I can hit that steel every other time :p

Steel plates at 100 were something we used to do regularly as well.We used to have to shoot pistols on the 100m range so we had targets all the way from 10m all the way out to 100m. I had a plate the size of a gallon paint can lid that I used to hang at 100m. After a few weeks, hitting it about 70% of the time was doable. It's been awhile since I've done the 100m plate so I'm sure it would take some time to get decent again but once you get really familiar with a gun it's pretty amazing what you can do with a pistol. It's all in what you train. This young guy obviously has had some good training time on his pistol. For him to do it under the pressure he was under was amazing but practice builds muscle memory, and confidence. He probably didn't think much just reacted.

I didn't feel you fully appreciated the quality of the guy's feat and were sort of minimizing it. That's how I read it. I mean, I can appreciate your group have the skills and might pull such a thing off, the question is how many people would, especially to risk more than one snap shot?

Hitting a human sized target at 40 yards is not particularly difficult. I applaud the good guy with the gun as much as anyone else, but let’s not pretend he’s super human. The fact that these shots are actually quite easy is precisely why everyone should be armed without limitation.

The Glock trigger pull is not exactly the best choice for making those kinds of shots at that distance. Kudos to the shooter for mastering it and making 8/10 hits under time pressure. Some serious training was obviously involved here.

Marketing guys may have a field day with this... what brand of ammo, any aftermarket parts used, what kind of underwear he was wearing... lol.

Kid deserves a medal is right.

The distance isn't the issue, until you factor in likely being shot at, and the risk of hitting bystanders.

I'm not aware of competitions that can replicate that.

Not to mention the fact that he didn't know he was going to be performing that day. Cold of the bench, no stretching, no warm up, no zeroing shots. Went from eating a sandwich to ringing the guys bell in what probably seemed like the blink of an eye.

10 shots, 8 on target, no bystanders hit. Thats better than the Ottawa Police can say.

Agreed the shots are readily makeable, and that everyone should be free to be armed.

Its important to keep in mind that while the shot may be easy from an academic standpoint. Not featured in that picture is all the bystanders who may have been running willy nilly, the noise, the light, the confusion, the uncertainty, the obstacles. And then the guy performed.

Lots of olympic hopefuls go home in tears knowing that their 'personal best' would have let them carry away a gold medal, except that on the only day it mattered, they didn't perform.

There are good books written by Canadian marksman talking specifically about the importance of mental readiness to physical performance.

Many Americans are carrying a Glock 48, light and small but the trigger is not the best. Just got mine and haven't shot it yet but soon after I get my additional magazines. 40 yards is doable but this was a high pressure situation with a mobile target and possible civilians along the way. He must have a lot of practice that kid. Having said that, I brought young shooters to the range and there are some real talents out there.

I've seen a couple of videos where guys replicate this and you can see their ego come into play. One guy got 10/10 at 40 yards and thought he was king ####. Hehe uh throw a mass shooter in there bud and see how ya do

Kudos to the shooter who put 8 out of 10 where they needed to be & put the bad guy down. With no one else hit.

NAA.

I haven't really delved into the details but I assume he "ambushed" the loser so if his first shots were hits he was already winning early. The report I heard he was telling people to get behind cover as he prepared to engage.

Well done for sure and now doubt he will be enjoying some free beverages of his choice for the rest of his life if it comes up in a social environment.
