I have bars on my windows, a security screen door and a reinforced entry door. They are meant to deter some and give you time to prepare a welcome for others. Also have a deep hole on your property.

Airgun will be considered a firearm in this nature. So just use a actual firearm.
We as kids all were shot by airguns and it didn't stop us. So consider that when someone got adrenaline or drugs in their system.

And 26.5mm flare guns. I bet a parachute flare in the chest at 10' would sting........

To attempt to survive the liberal legal system, you might try a 12 gauge with non lethal rounds, like Lightfield rubber buckshot. Would certainly deter whatever was coming. If it escalated you could escalate to real ammo
Like you, my wife and I live in a semi-remote rural area in eastern Ont. We have bears, wolves, coyotes, raccoons etc. in and around our bush lot, so it is perfectly reasonable for us to have pepper spray on hand, and on our belts when we're outdoors. We are both in our late 70s so no longer swift of foot or fist. I do have firearms on the place, but obviously those would be a last resort. While home invasions here are not as common as in urban centres ( yet) they do occur .
The weak part in most residential home doors is that no matter how expensive a lock or deadbolt you install, it will likely socket into nothing more substantial than a 3/4" factory frame often made of a softwood or the very weak Philippine mahogany. A swift boot will break most deadbolt tongues free of that in no time. The hinge side is almost as equally vulnerable.
Both my front and back door frames are reinforced with 3/4" plywood glued and screwed between the door frame and the 2X6 wall framing. Easy, cheap improvement that will delay a would-be punk long enough for legitimate inhabitants to prepare a welcome.
If it becomes necessary to discharge bear spray indoors, it should be borne in mind that it lingers in the air and you are going to season yourself as well as a perp unless you take a deep breath before firing, and retreat immediately.
Of course intending to use bear spray against humans is illegal, but if bought for a legitimate use by someone in a rural area it is reasonable to have one on hand, and if faced with protecting yourself and loved ones against an outside threat, it would be reasonable to use whatever is on hand.
Hornet spray makes a dandy substitute. It fires a solid stream a good distance and goes where you aim it. Not quite as effective as a load of buck, but a very good deterrent. Again, it's a reasonable thing to have in your home.
Another handy, but 'politically correct' weapon is the small version of aerosol boat horns. Those things will fit in a pocket or purse but make a racket loud enough to wake the dead 100 yards away. A noise that loud will make an aggressor stop what he's doing for a second or two; long enough for you to retreat or access stronger measures.
You are half way to success already, just by having started to think about the unpleasant necessity of defending your home. Home invaders' main weapon is surprise and terror. Like all bullies they don't expect determined resistance of any kind, and by thinking about variables beforehand you put yourself in a much better situation. By being smart enough to also consider the legal ramifications you are well ahead of the game.
I am no lawyer, and wouldn't dream of giving advice about when and how to employ firearms for self defense. Suffice it to say that that is the ultimate choice an individual may have to face if confronted by a potentially fatal threat. The best we can hope for is that we are able to act reasonably under incredible stress, and that our increasingly questionable courts agree with that evaluation.

Secure windows and good locks on your doors... keep a baseball glove or two, a baseball and a bat handy. You never know when you might use them.
If you have a PAL buy a shotgun and some shells and a trigger lock and a lockable box to keep the ammo in.
There may be bears when you go walking so bear spray would be handy as well.

Shoot a home invader with a non-lethal 12 gauge round and they will sue you to the point, your house will be their house.
NEVER use non-lethal ammo. Very, very bad advice my friend.......

Any scenario that ends up with a body or significant injury to another person will likely end up fighting it out in court, even just the threat of violence to a home intruder may end up with you being arrested.
The best you can do is make sure that you can prove you acted in good faith and in self defense. (Ensure you can identify your target clearly, issue a clear verbal warning and have a good lawer)
