Assuming your AR is .223/5.56 you can scratch these off the list:

-#AB-285-R: Sibbald Flats 50 metre handgun range: Allows for the use and discharge of handguns contained in the .22 Long Rifle, 9mm Parabellum and .357 S&W Magnum template groups and the use and discharge of .17 and .22 calibre rim fire rifles. (Shotguns may be discharged in a horizontal position only and only by authorized groups). The use and discharge centre fire rifles is not permitted.

-#AB-347-R: Sibbald Flats Trap range = Allows for use and discharge of shotguns for the purpose of Trap shooting. The use and discharge of handguns and rifles on this range is not permitted.

-#AB-375-R: Sibbald Flats Swiss Pistol Range= HANDGUN - This range is approved for all handgun cartridges contained in the template groups ".22 Long Rifle", "9mm Parabellum" and ".357 S&W Magnum". The use and discharge of rifles or shotguns on this range is not permitted.

Yeah I should've taken those out. There basically two option. I don't know the difference or which one is best for me. It's 556 yeah. No idea which one is best or more suitable for an AR shooter

I attempted contact with the website for their range the first few months I came to Alberta (three years ago) and only got a reply where to pay. Not much else. So I believe many go to the ranges in the same area that are not locked down. I love IPSC and had many questions but no one volunteered answers, so for that reason I would think you are not breaking any rules going to the un-gated ranges in the same area??

Please anyone correct me if I am wrong?

The only public ranges out are for non restricted only...the private members only range is the only restricted range there...and if you are not a member, you ain't getting in...so I was told. I have never seen an AR out on the public range, heard people take them... silly way to lose your rifle, PAL and freedom in my opinion though...should one get caught.

There's a bunch of public ranges there that do not state non-restricted only. A couple of them do. But there are a couple spots where it is not printed. Nothing says I can't shoot restricted there.

Except the law! No restricted at the public ranges! Do yourself a favor and read the regulations.

I believe that the public range is non restricted only.

The other ranges are all members only and you can joint through the main website or by one of the subsidiary groups.

You can join IPSC which also shoots rifle matches at the ipscalberta.com website.

I have been shooting in that area for years. Was a member of Buffalo target shooters out there once, there's also rosebud silhouette club there. Neither of those clubs take paying drop ins. The alberta provincial range is there as well but it's a competition only range. I am doubtful that you can take restricted firearms to the public range though you could try and call up for an ATT, or were you planning to bother with that?

How can a range be non-restricted only? kinda defeats the whole point of being a range...

The public range land is provided by APRA as a service for sighting in of hunting rifles I do believe. The grounds are maintained by the clubs in that area to keep vandals off their ranges. It's a slippery slope out there a lot of garbage around, only a matter of time before they start kicking people out of there. The place is a heat score.

All homestead public ranges are NON RESTRICTED ONLY. Read the laws and read the signs. The range is not approved for restricted firearms. If you want to shoot your AR and use it for anything useful, join the BTSA. We will be having weekly Wednesday night multi-gun (Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun) club matches starting in May at the latest and running until late October.

Ok I got a little more info from an email.

"We have three target shooting organizations using the APRA (Alberta Provincial Rifle Association) Homestead Shooting Complex. Each organization is the steward of their respective ranges and thus they are three distinctive clubs:

The BTSA (www.btsa.ca) shoot target pistols such as IDPA and IPSC plus they have a 200m rifle / pistol range (they are the only club that allows the use of restricted firearms)

The AFRA (afratargetshooters@gmail.com) shoot long range DCRA style target TR & F-Class rifles from 300m to 900m

The Rosebud Silhouette & Benchrest Club shoots centerfire benchrest from 100 yds to 300yds and rimfire and centerfire metallic silhouettes from 50m to 500m.

-For Rosebud general inquiries and membership information contact: rosebudsilhouette@gmail.com

-For information on getting involved in competition benchrest shooting please contact: rickpollock@shaw.ca

-For information on getting involved in competition silhouette shooting please contact zzzpatter@gmail.com

All of these shooting organizations are competition orientated and are not general gun clubs. When you join one of these organizations you will also be joining the APRA. The APRA does provide a free, unsupervised, 100m public rifle range (paper targets only) and a free public shotgun only range (clay targets only), which are open during day light hours 24 / 7 except for range clean up days or for safety reasons (see APRA Website Calendar). None of the public ranges allow the use of any sort of restricted or registered firearm. Other than the public shotgun range, we do not have any other shotgun facilities."

I want to shoot restricted. So my only option is the btsa ranges. Has anyone been to the btsa ranges at homestead? I just want to target shoot. I don't want to compete.

I just want to hang out and plink. I don't really want that much structurez. But whatever I have there is all I have. If that's my only option, so be it.

You are welcome to join the BTSA and come and plink and target shoot. HOWEVER, BTSA is a handgun-centric range, and we have events almost every single weekend from May through October where various portions, and sometimes up to and including the entire APRA facility, are closed down to provide space for the competitions. Once you have a key, you may come and shoot any time you wish. Weekdays the range is empty except Monday and Wednesday nights when we hold Monday Holster Night (IPSC, IDPA, Steel Chaellenge etc. fun shoots and training) and Wednesday nights when we hold the 3-Gun/Multi-Gun night.

Have you considered joining the calgary district target shooter association? They have the Shepard 50m/100m range plus the new milo range

Membership is currently closed to new members. Membership opens from December to February for renewals and new applications. Renewals are processed first, then new membership applications are accepted. Membership is capped. The cap is pretty high, but it is capped.

Thanks for info. Is it busy on week nights? Is it paper targets only? Just would like a bit of info before I join any range.
