Hornady’s new 300 and 338 Ruger Compact Magnums (RCM) outperform the 300 and 338WMAG

Well look at this another short mag? This is a spin off of the 375 Ruger case from what I can tell. I was browsing around Hornady's website this morning and found this. http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=761 Besides the picture of Matt Hughes on Hornadys site LOL I'm sure this one isn't going to last. But the cool feature of this cartridge is that it does it all from a 20 inch barrel. But I'm still not sold on it. Don't think I'll be rushing out to buy one anytime soon. I'm sure there will be a few of these forsale on Exchange board before the end of 2008
 
I think WSM's have already bumped the Rem.'s SAUM's and have gained a pretty solid foothold. A new shortmag, really offering very little more is probably going to sink.
 
These cartridges look awesome! So tiny and so much power! Short light rifles capable of delivering magnum power without the burden of carrying a heavy long barreled clunker... and all with less recoil!

If it as good as they say, it sure sound's like a winner to me! The only thing that could kill this idea is high ammo prices and low availablity.

And they say this new RCM cartridge "out performs"...

Like OK are the Deer getting faster, or evolving armour plate or what? :rolleyes:

The 300, I'd have to agree with you, but the 338...I don't believe it will flounder.

North Americans never have been sold on metric cartridges en masse (with the exception of the 7mm's).

The 338 may be just what the doctor ordered for those looking for a compact, powerful cartridge that delivers near identical results (with a little more "on paper" jam) to the 325 WSM/35 Whelen/350 Rem Mag/338-06 in a ###ier, more popular bore diameter.

Having said that, I don't anticipate it'll make the top 10 in reloading die sales anytime soon.

Lots of smoke and mirrors there. They don't even compare .338 loads with the same bullets. I don't know if it'll beat .338WM performance, but I bet the .338RCM will be a hot seller in the states. A short action .338 that will handle 225gr and larger bullets that the .338FED can't.

As for the .300RCM, well it will never catch up to the popularity of the WSM.

Another downfall is ruger will likely be the only manf. to chamber them.

Does anyone know why Winchester went 325 WSM instead of 338? Maybe results of the larger caliber weren't very impressive for some reason.
