Changed the mounts to two piece Weaver bases and rings. Going to spend a season with this rifle just for old times sake. ;)

Stay tuned....

The load is using the new bullet at 2480 fps, sighted in three inches high at 100 yards. Will shoot for group size and trajectory at 200 and 300 meters as well.

Never got up there tonight. Always other stuff in the way, but tomorrow we’ll get it done.

Brethren is beholding lol. What a hammer, and it looks awesome too, I can almost feel it from here, in the hands, and on the shoulder. ;) Hope it shoots to your expectations.

Tremendous old school cool right there Ted

Okay, got the rifle sighted in three inches high at 100 yards.

It is about two inches low at 200 meters. That's 227 yards, and decided I won't be using that 220 gr loading beyond 250.

Never bothered shooting at 300 meters since the 3X wasn't enough to sight properly. Heading out next week.

Looks like it worked just fine, I’ve had similar results with 165gr .308 interlock factory ammo. Shot 3-4 deer with them, all were full pass through’s except for one and it expanded perfectly. 70-75m quartering shot on a big mule buck.

Well, Brethren, here’s the latest recovered 220gr Hornady. Twenty-two inch 30-06 barrel, muzzle velocity was a tad over 2400 fps.

Complete pass through the lungs of big moose at more than 200 yards. Walked about 60 feet and went down. Bullet caught in the hide on the far side.

Devil's advocate here... wouldn't a 180 or 200 gr partition given similar or better penetration with a flatter trajectory, as well as hitting harder because of the spitzer design?

I can't speak for the OP, but it seems to me that this whole project was to have an old school vibe to it. The rifle, rings and bases and scope were all old school FUDDesque. The bullets were a perfect fit. To really make it complete would be a load using surplus 4831 powder. 🙂

I've often noticed a visible difference in game hit with round nose or wide flat bullets over spitzers. It seems to rock their bodies more on impact

Spitzers will carry more velocity further but inside 200 yards I don't think it matters
Just my observations on deer and bear I've never shot a moose

I'm with you. I doubt it makes a damned bit of difference in 95% of all hunting shots..

Just a quick update, the designated 220gr FN is now at a new address and has become a quick-change outfit. The second barrel is a new 9.3x62, and has been test fired with a heavy bullet load and very satisfying results.

More good news, it’s FN brother in the same household is a very accurate 270 Winchester. Some people really have class!

Stay tuned….
