Hornady 220 gr Round Nose bullet in the 30-06 actual hunting experience?

This thread makes me want to try 323 220 grain woodleighs in my 24 inch 8x57. Generally shooting 196 grain semi spitzers/ rn

Ted is just pulling our chain, I found this old picture of him with a Springfield sporter and a weird looking bison.

Well, that's certainly encouraging, and is what we always expected using the old pre-Interlock bullet. Thank you.

One last question, do you know if they were the 220 Interlocks designated as #3090 or the older ones?

Ted

No idea. There may have been both as they have been in common use amongst my family for decades.

I think last sentence about on point to what OP was concerned with - Post #5 - you sound like you had very good experience with those bullets "back in the day" - how do you know that what you buy today as replacements, are same as (or going to perform the same as) what you are "used to"??

I don't... but sawing slices out of bullets aside, I really doubt there will be a "significant" difference in iterations... I am sure they will work out fine.

A modern day .318 WR.

Okay, but here’s a quick bit of information in this regard. I called Hornady about this, and spoke to one of their tech people. He told me the newest bullet is designed to expand and penetrate to 12 inches in ballistic gelatin. That doesn’t sound like much, but perhaps Ganderite can fill us in on the density of that stuff.

I received two more boxes of bullets today. Turns out they are the older ones in the red boxes with the metal corners and no model numbers. So, now have some of each design.

We will have lots of the older ones to compare with during the testing.

Okay, Boys and Girls, we are about to head out with some 220s in an old FN sporter. Will let you know how many bears are with us on the way back home.

Bacon, burger, chops, cured hams, smoked ribs, stew, and sausage lie ahead.

Is that not Ernest Hemingway? I know he shot a lot of African game with a G&H 30-06 WITH 220 gr. SOLID’S

Class is in! So Hemingway and O'Conner names tied to this combo? I wonder why it works?

30-06 - 220 gr Solids
SD .331
Solids (no change in SD for max penetration)
Impact Velocity 2200 fps or Higher

Wonder if we've seen this formula before?

6.5x54 Mannlicher - 159 gr solids, SD .326, same impact velocity ranges.
7x57 - 173 gr solids, SD .306, same impact velocity ranges.
375 H&H - 300 gr solids, SD .305, same impact velocity ranges.

That 30-06 220 gr option is a real dandy imo. It mirrors the 375 H&H 300 gr for velocities with an 8% penetration advantage and 21.5 ft/lbs recoil energy in a 10 lb rifle vs 40 ft/lbs with the 375. Lots to love there. Give it squishier bullets for our continent and increase the wound channel while still going deeper than just about anything else available.

So we're all in agreement that a blunt 30 cal bullet, IF it hits the vitals, will kill big game.

But 6.5mm projectiles that open up to that and a half, easily, just don't have the lethality for big game, according to some lol.

Jokes aside, Why Not, that is an awesome classic rifle you have set up there and a real time tested bullet. Enjoy the hunt, good luck and the cooking plans sound delicious lol

Blakeyboy,

Aye! The 200gr Partition sounds like a beast of a bullet too. Just pricy as all getout these days but once you work a load up, 100 should last quite a few years.

The 200gr Partition is a digging machine. This one went in steeply quartering away and was found at the base of his ear.

Holy cow. Monster bear and great hunting! That's a serious amount of animal to have shot through.

Rifle looks like a very nice setup as well
