Hornady 7.62x39 with ballistic tip at LeBaron

What the hell, I bought a box as well. Nothing wrong with non-corrosive, even if it comes at a price. Still cheaper than most other centerfire ammo at less than $1 per round. They're all going down range tomorrow. :p

The cases are no better than the common Czech surplus stuff, and I suspect they may come from the same factory.

BTW, they're rated at 110 fps less than the Prvi Partizan 123 Grain PSP and FMJ's. 2350 vs 2460 fps.

What Beltfed said. I takes the Czech stuff, pull bullet and seat a Hornady 123 SST. Goes Huntin!:D I tried dumping all the powder out of the cases, average the weight, powder each case accordingly and then seat bullet. Still shoots about 2 inch group out of XCR. Good enough for the range this round works at. Interesting note, Czech surplus out the XCR will shoot just over the inch very consistently.

works out about $25/50 ( i don't bother with dumping the powder)

takes about 10-15 min to do 50 rounds with rcbs collect puller

be interesting to get some of those and compare them to surplus with sst

I'm dumping all 50 down range tomorrow and I will be comparing them to:

MFS 123 GR FMJ (made in Hungary)
Prvi Partizan 123 GR PSP (made in Serbia)
Czech surplus 123 GR FMJ

This should be fun! :)

Fools I am buying it at $30 bucks a box. I just bought 6 boxes cost me Just under $200 bucks shipped for 300 rounds . Now that is a find. Sorry have to keep this find a secret.

As per 'Back40sniper',

If you hunt and use hunting bullets, buy a case or so of surplus and a box of 50 or 100 premium hunting bullets.
Pull 20 or 30 FMJ and seat the premium bullets or whatever you'll need for hunting season and use the rest of the surplus as-is to get practiced up for those off-hand and kneeling shots.
Pulling a hundred bullets and re-seating premium hunting bullets in their place should take a half hour or so.

Don't forget to factory in the "luxury" fee for non-corrosive. lol. I bought a couple boxes at Lebaron in Markham today. Same lot number as the others here. Thanks for the heads up Radiohead! Better deal than the Privi hunting ammo I have.

I grabbed 4 boxes @ LeBaron's today, thanks for the heads up!

Oh ya, I got some because I've shot deer with the SST bullet out of my 308 & 7mm Rem Mag, and it works AWESOME!

Cheers
Jay

So, you want the luxury of non-corrosive, huh? And the Cheap of surplus as well?
So buy a crate from CanAm, pull the bullets, seat the SST, hunt away. 1200rd crate $400, $0.33 each, use same powder and primer, SST bullet is $0.38. Brings the cost to $0.71. is it worth $0.09? Only you can tell. To me it is. I don't consider time spent as a cost. I find it a relaxing period since I have, by necessity, eliminated distractions. So, is saving $9 worth spending an hour pulling tips, measuring powder, and seating hunting tips? To me it is. Cheap relaxation therapy from where I sit.
However, it also gives you the ability to shoot non-corrosive ammo for practice that performs pretty close to what you are hunting with. I have found very little difference in POI when I switch bullet tips in milsurp.
That being said, in a bolt action chambered for X39mm, I use commercial components and 150gn bullets.

That is a good option. I do find reloading relaxing as well but most of my time is spent reloading .45 and 9mm as I shoot thousands a year of pistol and maybe a couple hundred with my hunting rifles.

I guess considering whether your time is a "cost" to be factored in or not is relative to what you do. I also enjoy reloading very much. I too find it relaxing but for me, for the *few* hunting rounds I would expend in 7.62x39 ammo, I'd just as soon buy the SP ammo.

Regards,

So the surplus stuff from CanAm is non-corrosive? Not a bad price!!

Anyone has a range report? I have a choate mount to drill and tap but I hope to hit the range in two weeks with a scoped SKS.

Makes me laugh, 500 yards/-90.9" :p

I've seen these rounds locally, but opted not to buy any because the dealer could not say for sure they could continue to get them in. There is no point to resight a gun to a load that you only get once. Further to this, the soft points in PRVI are nasty accurate and available in many places for not too much difference of the price.
