Hornady GMX

last weekend, for the first time i put a 139 gmx in 7 mag into a bear. shot it in the shoulder at aprox 30 feet. can't comment on what the bullet looks like but there was a small entry hole with a 3 to 4 inch exit. not a lot of blood shot but went threw bone and turned the lungs to soup. bear did a somesault and ended up on its back. was dead when i approched. 30 foot shot was a good test on durability.

did you find any schrapnel or part of the gmx bullet into the meat?

Thks for sharing the info - Congrats on the Bear ! RJ

While I have not yet shot anything with the GMX, I have a load in my 300WSM that is a zinger.
6X grains of Reloder 17, and the 165 GMX are averaging under .75" at 100, and right around 2.0" at 300.
Chrony numbers look pretty good as well. I think I'll take it moose hunting this fall. :)
Regards, Eagleye.

I used gmx last year elk hunting with my 270 winchester. They performed great and will be using them as my hunting bullets from now on.

What is the diff' between the GMX and Barnes TSX?

GMX is made of guilding metal, it has canelures to reduce pressure and copper fouling and it is a 6 petal design vs 4 petal for the TSX. We just shot 13 animals in past two weeks with the .250-grain 375 GMX and the 165 grain GMX in a 30-06. We shot lion, eland, and black wildebeest with the 375. We recovered two bullets. One from the eland...it passed through the shoulder bone and hung on the far hide. Shot was about 150 yards. Weight retention was 98%. The second was recovered from the wildebeest. It too went through shoulder and hung in hide on far side. Shot was 238 yards. Weight retention was 99%....all that was lost was the plastic tip. Lion was pass through at 40 and then 8 yards.

In the 30-06 we recovered 3. Two were shoulder shots....zebra and blesbok.....both hung on hide on far side with 99% weight retention. The other was a frontal shot on an impala and it hung in hide in hip. The remainder of animals were all pass throughs. Even on very small game, steenbuck and duiker, expansion was devestating

Quite impressive. Do you think it would work well on sheep?

Here's the 250 grain GMX from my eland. The six petal design does offer some impressive frontal area.

I understand those eland are tough customers. Great performance. If the GMX also works well on deer sized game too, it would be a do everything bullet. I would think you would want the velocity high and bullet weight on the low side so it would adequately open up on deer size animals.

I won't shoot distances greater than those that allow a 1900fps impact velocity with the GMX. Even with a 30-06 you are still talking close to 500 yards so other than for very long range shooting, they are a good choice for me.

I know some larger calibers are in the works. I'd like to see something heavier in the .338 but everything else seems to be a fairly good fit so far but I'm sure the line will continue to expand.
