hey guys, with Fed. gold medal .308 reaching to around $50, i can no longer afford to shoot factory match ammo, and im looking to get into reloading, i will be splitting the cost of the reloading equipment with a buddy, so im looking to get something that i wont have to upgrade from down the road, just buy it once and be done with it kinda thing.

i hear most people recommend a single stage to learn on, but would it really be THAT difficult/ impossible/ unsafe to learn on a progressive?

i ask because from what i read, the single stage is really slow, and i shoot quite a bit per session, in a few various calibers, so a progressive would make more sense..

ill be looking to start developing loads for precision shooting as well as just normal plinking loads

im eyeing the Hornady Lock N' Load progressive press right now, pretty tempting especially with their 1000 free bullets offer.

also, what other equipment would i need to get in order to be able to reload?

Lnl

Ihave been using a LNL for about three years now and have nothing but good things to say about it . Everything that you could wan't to load is a possibility and reasonably easy to set up and master for both rifle and pistol rounds!

I'm looking at getting a LNL myself soon, and start reloading 10mm, .40, 45acp, 9mm and .338wm.

One thing I've been totally sold on is the RCBS lockout die. I'm certainly buying one of them for reloading pistol ammo.

The greatest fear I have is of a double charge making to the range. The lockout die seems to be the perfect solution to that.

You might want to read up on that and consider it with your purchase.

Is Hornady honouring the free 1000 bullets in Canada? I thought that was strictly a US thing???

I learned on my LNL. I read as much as I could in advance, and most of what was discussed was over my head..until I got the press. After reading the manual, I got to know all the parts by name and it all made sense.

Just go slow at first, loading one round at a time. Get to know what each station is doing when you pull the handle. Once you go through that a dozen or so times, load normally but go slow until you get the feel of it.

x2. I got mine right away with my dies, and it has been GREAT. The only problem with the LNL and a Lockout die (or any other powder checker) is that if you want to use a taper crimp die, or seat and crimp in separate stations, you need to buy the powder through expanders (this was one such discussion where I had no idea what they were talking about before I owned a press ) I may switch over to this eventually, but my reloads work fine with the dies I have. I just have to remove them manually since the ejector wire gets in the way for the .45.

thanks for the responses guys!

yup! they are honoring the deal to us here in canada too! says on the application form :D

Why do people freak out about the double charge when loading with a progressive press? If you have an auto-indexing press, this can be almost impossible to happend. Unless you are a complete retard, there is NO way to double load a case.

I use my Lockout die to check for squib loads, since getting one in a competition sucks. It will lock the up either way, so it's win-win.

I just bought a LNL, looks pretty good.

They are still doing the bullet offer in Canada untill end of year.

It costs 21.95 US for shipping the 1000 bullets, I don't know if there will be duty as well.

I have not used it yet as I'm trying to find a #1 shell plate for it.

All in all, looks like a good press for the money for sure.

Will Hornady ship the bullets up here without the paper work now? seems like no ones talking about import paperwork for the bullets.

im looking for the older thread of the guy who had the free bullets imported.

i reload for my 'precision' 6br on a single stage and .45 / .223 on my lnl ap.. i could never see myself getting the type of accuracy i want out of that progressive.. i reload specifically for them to function and go bang in my semi autos.. if i check various cartridges for powder charges... they all very a bit.. even just setting the dies in the quick release holders is a bit weird cause some of them need to touch the shelholder, and some of them need to be a bit off etc.. and your setting up 4 or 5 at the same time, and some of them loosen off, or twist 1/8 of a turn and come out, and that sort of thing, i got a bit of case lube blocking the opening, or something... of my powder drop and i had 5 gr. less powder in one load.. (small opening .223) and i ran out of powder once and ended up loading about 60 rounds without powder!! lol... now some of this is my fault.. well most of it. and i love my lnl for what i use it for, but none of these things will happen with a step by step single stage. just be careful!

You have some great comments there, its just hard to read! I'm not the grammer police but put some space and endings between your thoughts.

I have a LNL AP coming and I am interested.

thanks

I think the last statement applies to the first few...

When learning on a progressive, go slow, wear your "mechanical aptitude" hat (if you don't have one - if you scrape your knuckles when pulling a wrench out of storage - then maybe you shouldn't be reloading), and watch single cases go through the process before loading up the shellplate. Helps to have someone experienced mentoring.

LNLAP with case feeder. I've had mine for 5 years excellent. Get a a good scale and some check weights. Bullet puller just in case. There is a powder cop die for safety. Lee factory crimp die works in last station. The new EZEJECT does not have the wire case ejector. My press still looks new. My guess its loaded 30k plus in ammo.
Clean the press and give it a light oil rub. Get a dust cover . It will last a long time. My RCBS stuff is 36 years old, it looks like it came out of the box.

Make sure your work bench is strong and stable. I used 3 inches of hardwood , no press wobble on down stroke.

Oh Boy Oh Boy

Mine can to my door step today:D

For crap sake order the shell plates at the same time:( I didn't!

I looks and smells great and I can't wait to set it up.

It took me a long time to commit to this progressive press. I read every thread and post I could about every press for a year or so. Received some great advise from many of the nutz along the way. I am not going to say its better than Dillon ,RCBS or Lee. It just has features that appeal to me and I can use all the rest of the riggin that I aleady have.

I am excited about this delivery as up till now I have never had a new setup other than my Lee Anniversity.

I called the customer service rep and she said to send the money order for shipping, that's it.

I still have not received the bullets or any word from them though:(
