Ok, im my little quest to find the all around hunting bullet (a bullet that i can use for deer to moose to bear, and anything else i want to hunt:) ).

Ive came acorss the Hornady 180 grain SST in 30-06 and the Winchester Supreme Accubond CT 180 grain in 30-06.

Which one of the two would be a beter all around hunting bullet? I would be buying both these bullets factory.
 
The Accubond is a tougher bullet than the SST as far as we have seen on Deer so far, it (SST) is more like a Nosler Ballistic tip.

The Hornady Interbond would be more even suited to compete against the Accubond although arguably just behind the Nosler offering.

As far as answering your question though, Accubond out of the two you picked.

When you say buying these "bullets" factory, do you mean loaded cartridges?

Hornady SST are hunting bullet, the Honady A-Max (similar in appearance) is a target bullet. Although some have usded the A-Max succesfully for hunting but that's for another thread.
 
I agree John. We have only used them (SST's) in the 270 Win and they were nasty. Perhaps a bad batch applies here. A 180 30 cal could well be made heavier as they would likely use it in the 300 magnums too.

Icpaintballer, for a box of loaded rounds why not get a box of each and see how they shoot. At the same time shoot both of them into a big block of wood and try to retrieve them to see how they hold up.

I shot my 154gr Interbonds into a block of wood at 150 yards and they came out looking very much the same as the one I pulled from my Deer at 250 yards. It will never be exactly the same as a hunting situation but if you retrieve three specimens of each you will have a good idea of what your working with, and you will know how well they shoot in your rifle.

I like the accubond.
Remington also offers Swift Scirricos and A-frames loaded for the 30-06.Dont foget PMC loads the Barnes-X also.
 
I have shot the Supreme balistic silvertips out of my 30-06 before and they were really flat nice shooting bullets. But i am kinda shying away from silver tips now, becuase that is what i am shooting now (just the super x silver tips, 180gain).

I think i have my mind set on the winchester ones because I have shot the "little brother" silvertips before without any problems.
 
I have used the Winchester Accubond CT load exclusively for the last ~3 years. I have shot antelope, black bear, moose, mule deer, white tail deer, and coyotes with them. All were one shot kills except the moose which took two (one would have worked but it was still standing). I was impressed with the results from each animal and will continue to use that load until
I find some reason to make a switch.
 
Accubond load without a doubt.
I've personnally seen the 180 SST's blow up on the side of a Big Bull from a 300 Mag........the comment that they are like a Ballistic tip Nosler is right on.

I would use them on Deer if it was the ONLY bullet my Rifle shot well........maybe ? but that's about it.
Stick to the Accubond load.
Or better yet find a Factory offering with the Nosler Partition:dancingbanana:

Hi,

Never tried the Hornady so I can't comment about them but as for the Accubond, I have 2 mooses with them in my 7MMRemMag and they work great, they shoot flat and are accurate enough in my rifle (Accubond 160gr).

I've recovered 2 bullets, one in each moose and they've held over 60 or 65% of their weight :cool: (will have to verify).
They should perform good on bears and whitetails also :D .

After verification, the one I've retreived (2003) in my first ever moose cow moose :D was a 160gr Accubond, WRet 106.5gr = 66.5%, she was shot at +- 850ft facing me. I hit in between the left shoulder and the neck and the bullet was recovered just in front of the filet mignon stuck in the spine, the other shot I took at her she was broadside ant it was a pass trough.

The second bullet was from this years buck, my again first moose buck and the first 2 shots were pass trough in the rib cage at 50ft and the recovered bullet was from a shot as he was quartering away (150+ yds) after he decided to take a run :eek: and hit below the hump on his left and ended in the inside right shoulder. Recovered weight of 116.9gr for a Weight Retention of 73%.

FWIW, Nugget shot his Moose with 200gr Accubonds this year. 80 yards broadside, complete pass though of both lungs, he hasn't had one of them stop in an animal yet. Mind you this is a 300 SAUM so it has more zoom than the 06 load.
 
I shot a nice buck(225 lb) with a sierra 165 gameking @ 200 meters , complete pass through, with lung hanging out the off side. So many bullets can do this. The sst and ballistic tip bullets are ment to do business at longer ranges, thats why they act like varmint bullets in close.
The only answer would be to avoid them , or have some heavy built jobs for the bush, and these for long range, then comes an issue with scope adjustments for 2 loads, :rolleyes: :runaway: LOL , you see its a mess with these bullets that expand well at 300 meters, but blow the hide off inside 100 :D
 
My recommendation is the Winchester Supreme Accubonds. I have used only Winchester Supreme ammo for years and switched to the Accubonds when they come out in 2004 in my 300WM and 270WSM. I reload now for my rifles but my wife still uses the factory Accubonds in her 270WSM.

Great bullet with devastating results. I have mentioned the performance of the Accubonds before in other posts on elk/moose/deer and to confirm the results, my wife shot her bull moose on the last day of the season on the morning of Nov.30/06 with her Tikka T3 LS 270WSM at about 325m. First shot was a miss, but she quickly reloaded as the moose stood there and placed the second shot behind the left front shoulder. The moose dropped, but then got up again, and she nailed him a third time and he made it to the willow bluff. We thought he went in , but as we walked up, we seen the moose dropped at the edge of the field-travelled maybe 20metres. My wife was just JAZZED! Both shots were complete pass-thrus at that distance with devastating results to the lungs. The 140gr Accubonds did their job, and to say the least, I was very proud of her! And to boot, she got us meat for the year, as I was unsuccesful at any elk or moose this season. Not too much time hunting as seasons past.

As for your rifle the 30-06, the 180gr Accubonds are a superb choice for any N.A. big game. I would stay away from the Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips for the bigger game-all right for deer I guess. With the Accubonds, the most part, complete pass thru shoots have (for us) a small entrance wound with huge exits, and I only recovered 1 Accubond bullet. Some people have had it the other way such as this pic.

Federal also has factory ammo in the Accubonds.

I have Barnes TSX to reload with, but as mentioned by horse men, I wont be changing bullet type anytime soon.

The only othe bullet if factory ammo would be the new Winchester Supreme Elite XP3's. Initial results for this bullet looks great, but the price will also be higher.

I did some reading on the XP3's. I would like to hunt with them, but again the costs is about $10 more a box.

I will get some of the accubonds sight in and hunt with them.


Now. What grain of the accubonds. Currenlty im dialed in for 180 grain. Again, i want 1 grain for everything. (30-06sprg).
 
I use 150 gr & 180 Gr SST's had no problems with them. I've used them on Deer, Moose & Buffalo all with great success. I shoot 308.
 
I used 180gr Winchester Supreme bullets since my Sako m75 SS 300WM was new (Failsafes & Partition Golds and now Accubonds) for everything. In the factory Winchester Supreme Ammo, you can only get 180gr Accubonds for the 30-06.

Will be a great bullet for overall use.
