How about a SPRING 2010 event?-All sks gong match at poco range

Emmab,

I estimate the steel gong at POCO to be about 10 inches in diameter, 3/8 inch thick.

It is hung on a steel horizontal pole that is about 1.5 inches in diameter. The pole has been hit by many many rifle rounds, and greatly deformed.

I'd say the hook for our gong should fit a 2 inch diameter bar, just to be sure we will have no problems hooking it over the bar.

I think we should keep the gong black (no paint) as any paint will be chipped off by hits, and we don't want to run 200 meters just to spray paint. On Tuesday evenings, there is no ceasefire once the range goes hot.

If possible, can your friends fabricate two gongs? Same size, to be fair. I'd rather not use the POCO club gong if it is not the same diameter.

10 inch diameter, at least 3/8 inch thick, with 2 sturdy hangers/hooks at the back to fit a two inch diameter bar. Hangers need some device to prevent gong from falling if hit squarely and loops around. Need two hangers/hooks about 5 -6 inches apart to prevent the gong from rotating on vertical axis if hit on sides. Rifle rounds can still pack a lot of energy at 200 meters.

Let us know the cost for these 2 gongs so shooters can chip in. We keep these gongs after the shoot and use only for our SKS matches. Otherwise, they'll be gone, shot full of holes and vaporized in a couple of weeks.

Armor plate would be almost indestructible, but would it be cost effective?

My apologies Emmab, didn't include your name first time around.

I am not sure if I can make it. I am working at the BC Tactical Rifle Championships on the weekend of the 20th and I have some other commitments after that. Better put me down as a maybe. Too many things to do, not enough time...

I can cut up some AR (abrasion resistant) plate from my work to any size you need. A 10-12 inch disc(s) is easy to get out the door too. AR plate is essentially armor plate, is this going to be acceptable or is the requirement for mild steel? Mild steel will 'catch' the bullet (and make a hole or at least a nice crater), AR will definately glance it off. The disc will last a lot longer for sure. It is possible I could get a piece of even harder steel.

Klaus E,
Thank you for your generous offer. I'd definitely go with Armor Plate. Probably last years. Fantastic! Don't think the range requires Mild Steel.

10 inch diameter should be challenging enough. Some of our hotshots might clean 20 out of 20 if we use 12 inch diameter:D

As far as "mounting" or "hanging" system, it's up to your ingenuity to come up with design that will not allow the disc to fall if it loops (not likely, but who knows), or spin on vertical axis, when hit anywhere.

Can you fabricate 2 gongs?

So, you in for the shoot?

I can do two gongs, really all I need to know is the diameter of the bar the gongs will be hanging from and how far below that bar they need to hang. If someone wants to give a detailed description of the ideal gong I will fabricate it. (I will go ahead and make two gongs 10" diameter, based on above descriptions even if I don't hear anything)

I will have to see about making it in for the shoot. As for the gongs I will have to make them when the boss is not looking and might not have them ready for the shoot. I will do my best.

Well my boys came thru and we're the happy parents of two 10" square X 1/2" plate gongs, just waiting to be marred. They might hang funny but it will be the same for everybody. THE GAME IS AFOOT

Emmab/Klaus, you guys are great. Am looking forward to the 1st BC SKS Shootfest. Easyr, will try and recruit more shooters if I see any SKS's pop up in the range tomorrow. :canadaFlag::canadaFlag::sniper:

I just PM'd easyrider, I can't make it in for this shoot nor would I have had the gongs ready in time. I am still going to do up the gongs from the AR plate and I will drop them or have them dropped off at the range. Anywhere in particular I should stash them?

Klaus, got your PM.

Those Armor Plate gongs are quite valuable:D BTW, how thick will they be?

If you don't mind, keep them with you, and bring them to the range when we have a gong shoot. If you cannot store them, I can do that for you.
I wouldn't leave them anywhere. Not accusing anybody, but people may find it irressistible to shoot them AR Plate gongs of yours.

Satain's suggestion is good but nobody would be really accountable for them cos they are not club property (unless you donate them)

You should see how much damage can be inflicted on steel plates by rifle rounds within a couple of weeks. Check out the 200 meter berm at POCO and you'll see mangled steel gongs and even the bar from where the plates hang are badly deformed. The rectagular plate was sliced diagonally in half.

People love shooting at reactive targets, specially at 200 meters.

Guys, please spread the word on the Gong Shoot. Rottboy, thanks for your initiative inviting your POCO comrades...(use commie terms for commie guns, right?)

Ya....take 'em with ya or they get shot:D

...and to the guys making gongs:

are you guys making hangers as well?
There is presently a frame that has two gongs on it (one looks close to falling off). This frame can hold 3 gongs max, while still keeping hitting them a challenge. Any additional gongs would require additional frames to hang them off of.

I'm hoping that crippled gong falls soon, so we have space to hang two:D

Tron, you coming for the shoot?
