just looking for some advice on the CZ 858, mostly in the 7.62x39 variant, how accurate can i get it at 200yrds? is five inch grouping unrealistic? the purpose will be for coyote hunting i was told that I should look in this direction, however can i put a put a scope on one of these bad boys?

It is a military surplus rifle so it isn't the most accurate rifle for hunting. I shoot a CIA VZ2008 (US) with a factory surplus bbl. I am an awful, impatient shot when it comes to rifles.... especially my surplus 7.62's with cheap surplus ammo. My vision is shot, I drink more than I should (according to the doctors), and I'm honestly not a good shot. With that said, I can pull off 4" groups at 100 yards on a good day using the 16"bbl and a trs25, Yugo surplus ammo. Your mileage better vary! Being a hunter, maybe smoothing pout the trigger system, you should be able to find 4" groups at 200yards with the proper handloads. As far as optics go, install a side mount rail and make sure you get a brass deflector to keep your scope from getting beat up.

That's my advice, its not worth 2 cents though!!

I put a NEA upper handguard rail and use a 2 to 6 power bushnell pistol scope. Works well out 200 yards.

If you assumed 3moa you would be close for surplus.

I have a sks that only shoots 3" at best at 100 yards. I think 5" at 200 is doable in the cz. Just messin around I put 4/5 in a 24" circle at 300yards kneeling. Had a red dot sight tho

Just out of curiousity I wanted to see how my CZ would do at 300 yards. It had only the red-dot on it. So no way of zooming in on the target. I put the red-dot just at the top of the 4ft target. It was consistently hitting just above the black target area, so a drop of about 14 inches. Grouping no idea, but next season I intend to test that.

north eastern arms cantilever mount works for myself. i had 3x9 mounted with no problems in either deflection or eye relief. it was overkill for what im using the cz for and have since gone to 3x red dot but your groupings are obtainable with that rifle

For the record: The CZ858 is not a sniper rifle...

The very best group I ever got with my 858 was 5 inches maximum with irons. I say maximum because I was shooting a 5x5 inch target and hit each time, for all I know it could have been a 3 inch group. At 100 yards a good group is 3 inches, but I did 2.5 inches only once.

These are bush carbines, not sniper rifles. I can't think of a better deer gun for rugged terrain. The only downside is that you can't buy ammo for them at crappy tire, but I think if someone pointed out to the corporate people there the number of rifles chambered in 7.62x39 they would have it in on the next shipment. I'd try this myself, but #### Canadian Tire, let them lose business to small outfitters.

I shot a coyote with mine at a tad over 100 yards with my red dot. Good enough for me. These guns are more accurate than most would expect, but, it is true that they are not sniper rifles - nor were they meant to be.

They were built to send lead at the enemy. The cool part is that they can actually place shots instead of just spray and pray like an AK47

It will all depend on 2 things:

1) Your shooting skills, and
2) The ammo you use.

Surplus ammo is wildly inconsistent, which is typical of its manufacture. Using factory hunting ammo or handloads, I've seen a good shooter get 2" to 2.5"@100 yds (no, not me :D) with irons (I told you he was good!!!).

I don't know if I'd use it on 'yotes with surplus ammo, but with factory hunting ammo or handloads you should be just fine. Mount a decent scope on it (takes some work - a rail is usually added to the left side for scope mounting unless you use a scout-style scope or a red dot in place of the rear sight) and you should be OK.

I'm thinking of getting one of those, but I want to keep (actually make) wood furnature for the rifle. Can I fix a small rail on the top of the butt for that rail to attach to?

I've owned two 858's and they were both consistently 3-5 MOA at 100 meters using Czech surplus and factory irons, shooting sand-bagged off the bench.
I also had a VZ58 in .223 that was quite accurate with 55 FMJ handloads.
2.5-3 MOA at 100 meters consistently. I regret selling that one :(

I know I could have tightened up the groups by an inch on any of the above rifles by using optics.
The factory VZ irons suck balls for me.
