After joining CGN a little over a year ago I have become a much better first shot game shooter!!

I learned so much about Rem 700s that I didn't know, that I now make absolutely certain of my first shot because:

The big claw extractor guys have told me how unreliable the dinky little extractor is on my 700s That in all likelyhood it will break or fail to remove that first shot.

Then the fixed ejector guys told me that even IF the dinky extractor did work the plunger ejector will not work if it gets a particle of dirt or brass shaving in it.

And last the CRF guys tell me that IF it does somehow manage to extract and IF it does somehow manage to eject, it will never reliably feed that next round.

And all this is only relavent IF it doesn't go off when I release the safety!!!

So really, shooting a 700 Rem is just like muzzle loading and it has made me a much better first shot guy.

Hope all have a good sense of humor and no I'm not trolling. This is just a humorous discertation on the diversity of opinions regarding bolt action rifles. ;) :stirthepot2:

Did you not slay an agitated lion at 40 yds recently?.... and, with a M700 of all things? ... :rey2

The audacity. :p

Truth be told, I've had a Rem bolt handle fall off ... didn't think I hit it thaat hard with the 2x4.
A push feed M70 did tie up the FP one time, with a brass shard inside the hard to disassemble bolt.

On the other hand, an improperly positioned cartridge in a Mauser mag ... will jam her up but good.

All my other "reliability issues" seemed to follow messing about, "refining" this and that, stuff that never needed "fixing" in the first place. :HR:

Darn it Douglas, you have made me doubt my first choice in rifles, the venerable 700....LOL. [plus spit my coffee all over my keyboard]

I think I will sell off my collection of them and stock up on Savages, Tikkas and other supposedly "superior" offerings...NOT!!!

Humor is a good thing, carry on.

Regards, Eagleye

CGN has made me a much better shot as well, but for a different reason. Since most people here can shoot a knat at 1000 yards with a stock Savage and a Barska scope in a 25 kmh crosswind I have been shooting more trying to figure out why I am such a poor shot! I can shoot sub MoA at 100 and sometimes 200 yards, but after that things go sketchy for me in the wind.

So now that I am shooting more to attempt to keep up with the average CGN rifleman, I am getting better!

Funny thing. I have owned over 100 Remington 700's in my lifetime.
Still own a lot of them.
A couple of these rifles are on their 3rd barrel, several are on the second barrel.

STILL: I have yet to have an extractor actually fail. [Had a gunsmith screw one up, though]

Never had an ejector plunger "stick" in it's bore.

Never had a bolt handle fall off.

And never had an accidental discharge when I took my safety off.

Do you suppose I am doing something wrong??

Eagleye.

I've learned that 1/8" of group size on 100 yard group size is of earth shaking importance, esp on a rifle sighted 3" high because 3" doesn't matter at all.

I'm also at peace with the idea that sighting in 3 inches high and shooting until the bullet drops 3" is vastly superior to holding 3 inches higher and shooting until the bullet drops 6".

I agree totally dogleg! I sight almost all of my big game rifles in this way, which usually gives me a max of about 300 yards to hold dead on the boiler room for a good clean kill. Give or take about 25 yards of course depending on which cartridge it is....

I shoot 3000yards 30mph cross wind and i am crosseyed. on a good day i will group it at 0.00000125" and bad day at 0.00000126"..

Dont mind me guys... im trolling...

Eagleye, you're just not abusing them correctly !!! If you put way more powder in them cases and set the triggers down to .0001" sear engagement, you can consistantly reproduce all the above flaws, including knock the handle off with a good rap (I've never been able to reproduce this one). You do have to pay attention when you pry the case off the bolt face to get the correct orientation to rip the extractor off. You will notice that the ejector plunger is now stuck in the hole too.

vviking, I just guess I'm sh!thouse lucky 'cause before I had all this new found knowledge, I just went out and shot everything with my 700s and never knew what danger I was in. I have shot all sorts of nasty, bities without the slightest notion I was tempting death, each and every time!! Not to mention all those once-in-a-lifetime trophies that should have gotten away due to rifle failure. I'm with Eagleye, I'm selling all my Rems, before they get me killed and buying mossbergs or salvages or maybe stevens. I'll have to do a bunch more research and get some good advice from the guys on here, for sure!!

Funny nobody else has mentioned the hollow plastic stock on the Rem XCR. I tried out my son's rifle on the range but the #$% woodpeckers kept coming in and pecking at the stock because of the fabulous (if you are a woodpecker) and loud resonance. It is a territorial imperative I believe. Anyway, I never did get it sighted in because it was so barrel-heavy that it kept tipping forward out of my hands. One woodpecker was crushed to death in the fall.

I have decided to stick with my Model 70's.:stirthepot2:

Glad to hear your selling those crappy rems. Although I don't think you'll get much for them, should probably just donate em to the Boy Scouts and replace them all with M70's!!

You know what?, best you do off all them Rem's to naieve(sp), unsuspecting, greenhorn nimrod's.

Me'll give ya a couple hunert fer dat shot out 6x284.... y' know, the loud one, same one as leaves smok'n black holes where thet 'lil silver primer thingy used to being.

Got me a welder, so I do ... can fix it, no prob.

Actually, CGN has made me a better shot. I came here, read all the posts, and did the exact opposite thing that the posts said. Got a nice 8 pointer this fall too. ;)

Said in the same spirit as the OP. :D
