I have a "loaned" 10/22 in my safe right now. I think it is "loaned" on an indefinate basis from a relative that doesn't need it anymore.

It came to me with a scope and tip off rings on it, but the scope is out of focus at distances over about 10 yards. I think it's toast.

I want to set this up as a grouse gun for my wife and put a new scope on it, but I don't want to spend much money on it as it will probably only shoot 10 rounds per year, and one day the relative *may* ask for it back...

What's a half decent scope for shooting grouse/squirels at a maximum distance of 25 yards a couple times each year?

Is it even worth it to go with the Crappy Tire Tasco's? Or, even with the minimal shooting, will I regret that purchase?

How cheap are the cheap scopes?

What scope is on it now?
You mention Kunuck Buck, that the only store close to you?
A 4X rimfire scope should work nicely for that purpose.
I put on a Tasco World Class Series 4x16x40 with the AO
to <10 yards parallax and it is crisp and clear. Maybe too much
for the 25 yard grouse idea.
Be sure to buy a rim fire scope only for this close range.
Most rifle scopes have a 100 yard/meter give or take parallax
which will cause the X hairs to move around on you.
This could be what is happening to you now.
Don't be too quick to toss the one on there away.
Cheers.

Zeiss is certainly nice. Get gtrussell to buy one for you if you can. Or a Bushnell 4x32 rimfire will do.

Am I missing something though? All the Zeiss scopes I'm looking at are $500+...that doesn't seem like it fits the "cheap" category. This thing won't shoot more than a box of .22 each year...

I find the field of view is to narrow on the rim fire scopes. My 10/22 has had a 1" tube bushnell sportview 4X on it for the last 10+ years with no problems. It's a good combo and cheap.

the classic 22 scope for years was either a bushnell 4x or the 3-7 , both with a 20mm objective lens- the one with the funny claw mount- it's usually easier for follow footprints than to break new ground

I have a Tasco World Class 4-16 x 46 on my 10 22. It has an adjustable objective and is about $110. I use it a lot for plinking and a little for grouse.

Cabelas should have a Tasco or Simmons scope for about $55 with rings, this will be a ok scope for your gun.

Now in my opinion I feel any scope under $150 is a cheap scope but that is just Me!

Yes, that's why I said get gtrussell to get you one. He was trying to be funny. So was I, until I mentioned the 4x32 Bushnell rimfire scope. It'll be about $50 new and it will work just as it should on a .22, which is right for your purpose.

I would get a zeiss,no question,hands down,best bang for your buck!

I would suspect the young little phuck'er came after my post d'eye'
reck'tin his :p at me.
He hasn't found me mention Loopull in any of my posts.
Bushnell has worked for me for many years and for all the
and d:h:, I haven't seen this Looeypulled stuff fix me eyes any better
than the rest of the optics out there.
And at X2 duh $$ I will rest my case on the competition.

Bushnell from crappy tire ETC. PS throw out the crapp tip off rings and buy some new ones

For close range hunting, you will be far better off with a low power wide angle scope.
Something like a 1.75x5, 2x7, or 2.5 power shot gun scope.
If you look around, they can be had in the $75 - $200 range.

For a max distance of 25yds, get a Bushnell TRS-25 that if the gun ever goes back to the "owner" you could use it on any other shotgun and/or rifle.
