How corrosive is corrosive ammo??

I think it's mostly built up BS. How many cases of corrosive ammo have been sold in the last hundred years, now how many pics have you seen of rusted out surplus/battle rifles contributed to corrosive ammo, and rifles not being cleaned with hot water/cleaning right after shooting?? I haven't seen, or even heard of one single case where it's been contributed to that. Seen pics of what happens when you leave a rifle in a dishwasher threw a full cycle, and I promise you, my rifle (CZ 858-2, note: nothing chromed) doesn't look anything like it after shooting over a thousand rounds of corrosive and at times leaving the rifle sit for months before cleaning it.

Brb, going to get my flame suit on now :D

I used to own an SKS that I put a couple of hundred rounds of corrosive ammo through during one session. Put it back in my gun safe meaning to clean it soon and promptly forgot about it for 6 months. When I took it out of the safe I needed a rubber mallet to open the action (it had corroded shut!!!). After a thorough cleaning it was fine but I resolved to always clean the day that I shoot so I don't put it off. The SKS shot the same as it had before (which isn't saying much).

I would never do that to my Cz-858 though.

i was shooting corrosive ammo through my sks awhile back, before i realized the czech stuff was corrosive, i however clean the barrels of my guns every time i shoot them, i didnt clean the gas system cuz i didnt know it was corrosive ammo at the time, the bore is nice and shiney still in the sks, but the gas piston and cyclinder had to be replaced because the corrosion in there was really bad, it wouldnt cycle rounds anymore.

just a bit of fyi

I have had four go through my hands: First was a pristine M59/66AB1 that was shot with "non-corrosive" ammo, rusted and pitted all to hell. Next I had a Yugo M59 that was slightly pitted from corrosive ammo, next was a CZ858 that was pitted with dark bore and lastly was a Russian SKS with a rusted and heavily pitted chamber. The Yugo M59/66AB1 was left for a month or so and was so bad I had to break it into parts and toss the barrel, literally looked like Swiss cheese in the bore. The gas piston was rusted into the gas tube... rifle was a mess. Gotta hate that corrosive "non-corrosive" ammo...

Yup, I got burned by the "non-corrosive", CORROSIVE ammo several years ago when it first hit the market in Canada. That czech ammo RUINED one of my guns, I ended up selling the gun...

People use it cause it's cheap, available (at the moment) and IF YOU KNOW IT'S CORROSIVE (which I did not at the time & the ammo was misrepresented by the retailer), you can deal with it appropriately...

IMHO, corrosive ammo is...:puke:

Cheers

i have bot a chrome lined SKS that was pitted so can imagine what it will do to a CZ858 or a yugo SKS.

I bought an SKS in 93 or 94 and have shot at least 10000 rounds through it over the past how ever many years and have never not once cleaned it. There is absolutely no rust anywhere on or in the barrel. I treat it like total garbage.

When in doubt, flush it out! It only takes a couple of minutes to boil the kettle, stick a funnel in the chamber, and pour. Same for the piston and gas cylinder, and a quick swish for the bolt. If the water is hot, it will evaporate immediately, and if not, a quick spray of your favourite, or even WD-40 will take care of it.

Or just use Mpro7 or Hoppe's Elite, which being water based, will also take care of the corrosive salts.

I have done the boiling water thing on ammo I only suspected might just possibly be even a little bit corrosive. An ounce of prevension....
