This was a real bone of contention at our camp last year.Hang it head up or down?? The reasons were all over the place,"my grandpa always said heads up!" I maintain that head down allows gravity to pull the blood and fluids down and out of the hind 1/4,s. Head up lets the fluid stay in the hams and can spoil faster. Any views on this ??

I was told that the head up guys do that because they like to leave the skin on if the weather is cold enough. Leaving it on and head up sheds rain and debris better. I learned (from the old guys)to always skin as soon as posible, so it is skin off and head down for me.

In my experience I also believe head down allows for better drainage especially when the animal is still whole. With quartered animals I'm not sure if it makes as big a difference.

OMG, not this thread again!!!!

We should start a H&S Arms FAQ at the top of the page:
How do you hang your deer.
Bear defense
30-06 vs ?????
And so on, and so on.;)

if were going this route we could just put 'SEARCH BUTTON' for 99% of everything new on this board

Heads up because we leave the hide on as long as we can.I find it is much easier to give the animal a final clean up this way.I usually wash the cavity with a bit of vinegar on a rag.

We used to go heads up intill the last week and then skinned and sent them off to the meat shop. Now we skin as soon as we are out of the bush for the night now don't laugh people, we hang them heads up (still....) but we start the skinning on the back of the neck, cut off the feet, and make cuts for were we want the hide to break, then with the loose flap on the back of the neck a chunk of wood, about 3x3x 1inch thickness, gets wraped over in side (fur on the wood) then a peice of 1/2 inch rope is tied around the hide behind the block, on the other end there is a loop. Next we take the hook from the winch on the 4 wheeler, let some cable out, back up intill it is taunt, then wind it back in, pulls the hide right off in seconds, mind you you will need 2 or more guys to hold back the deer. I have a pully system in the works for next year though. Don't laugh, we all thought it was pretty f*cked ourselfs intill we tryed it. You will be amazed.

Head down, hide off fast, and rinsed with clean, cold tap water to cool and clean the meat. Hang in cold spot for a week with low humidity and you will not have problems.

NOTE: I am now running and hiding, cuz BIGGRED will argue this thread. :D

head down, hide on...

if people have trouble skinning a hanging animal thats had it's hide on for a week; they must be doing something wrong...
just use your weight and pull on it, its that easy.....
that way you won't have a crusty out side layer

yo LAMBO! We watched a neighbouring camp do that .It was amazing except the rope broke-dropped half skinned deer in mud- block hit the guy on the atv in head-good for three stitches- finished our beers and LOL'd allthe way back! JITC

head down here mind you after the feild gutting it goes into the back of the truck gear is loaded and i drive 20 min home hang skin and butcher in my basement neighbors complain alot the last time i had a dead animal hanging out in the back yard lol

NEVER CUT THE THROAT, the only thing that cutting the throat accomplishes is giving the butcher a good laugh after you leave.
Gabels through the back legs to spread the legs and put a spreader in the ribcage to open it up for cooling.
HANG THEM HEAD DOWN.
Fluids that are left are more easily drained with the head down... removing the asophagus is a good idea, if you are not capeing for a Trophy.
If you are capeing the mount for a trophy hanging them by the head stretches the hell out of the hide at the neck... makes for a lousy mount.
Deer are much easier to skin hanging from the hinds and pulling the skin off with a vehicle is only for the handily challenged.
Keep it clean get it cooled quickly and you will have good meat.
Hanging by the back legs is just easier.... and smarter.

Head up, 'cause that's what I said the last time we discussed this, and you guys didn't change my mind.

I'll stick with this old guy :) he appears to know more than the rest :)
Head Up--Hide Off

For REDD; "NEVER CUT THE THROAT,"
Then how do you ? "removing the asophagus is a good idea"

"Fluids that are left are more easily drained with the head down"
How do fluids drain more easily that way?? Down is the same direction either way you hang a deer

"Deer are much easier to skin hanging from the hinds"
A lot of us find they are much easier to skin from the head :)

"Hanging by the back legs is just easier.... and smarter"
