I am embarrased to ask this but I bought a crate of ammunition and I can 't open the box. It seems to be soldered shut. There are two loops on each side to pull on but I could get a hernia and the damn thing won't open.

Get a long screwdriver or a pry bar or some other metal bar that'll fit in one of the loops and pull with both hands. The strap will cut through the solder around the edge. You only have to open it up enough to pry a corner up so you can get the goodies out. It's a pain in the ass, but it can be done.

There used to be a thread on this somewhere....

I used a huge flat-blade screwdriver to poke a hole in the soldering. I then worked by way along the seams, prying them apart. Tin snips might also work well.

i had the same problem; i actually used a chisel and saw to cut through the metal and rip the top off...if only someone had told me before.

Ha-ha! My mom has a tin opening tool in her cottage, it's been sitting there since the WW2. We used it to open olive oil cans. I am going to call her up and get her to ship it to me so I can post a digital picture. It may take a while though...

Spam?! SPAM SPAM SPAM! Gross, who eats that crap? Maybe that's why I had so much trouble, I've never had to open a spam can...At least the contents of the ammo crate were delightful(although maybe not to eat...)

I had my friend hold it while I put a large screw driver through a tab and pull on it. Had we been under attack at the time we would both be dead, it was TOUGH to open.
Anyway here's the end results

Pry up the tab, grab the tab with vice grips (locked), stand on the corner of the box and PULL!

Worked for me.

its all about leverage

the main thing I would point out is to not just pull for all your worth on the tabs with your fingers; I have a far cry from delicate hands and i've hurt mine pretty good trying that. use a tool (a hay hook would work beautifuly if u wanted to get that serious), but any type of bar that you could slip throught the tabsand pry works pretty good.

die standing and go down swingin

screwdriver/visegrips to pull it up. then the seam that`s all the way welded on the left hand side....that`s right, pull out the ole bayonet, it`s got to be good for something in this day and age!
