How far will a .22 LR kill?

We kill a dozen cattle every year on a farm with 1 yellowjacket 1' from the forehead. Instant death. LOTS of kicking and flailing but dead as can be. (And NO!!! not all at the same time lol)

Once I got my BDC scope for my CZ anything inside of 150m was doomed. I only bothered with animals under 40lbs.

Too many naysayers to bother with an argument but I will chime in as well. A .22 placed in the right area can do some major damage. And over quite a distance. 45 plus years of experimenting has left me respecting the little bullets.

I so miss the gopher patches....

I'm surprised no one has said they took a moose on the run at 600 yard with a 22 short.
Seems to be the way these threads go

I think it depends on the number of ft.lbs required to kill what you are killing how far out.

When I punch in the numbers for CCI Stingers in shooterscalculator.com, I see that at 500 yards the bullet only has 21 ft.lbs of energy remaining (and you'd have to adjust your sites for -477" if zeroed at 100y). So, would 21 ft.lbs kill what you are shooting at if you could hit it that far out?

My grandfather was a beef farmer and ran a slaughter house /meat business his whole life, butchering beef and pork was a everyday occurance. There was another guy not far who also ran a similar outfit and believe it or not they worked together many times because business was booming.

I have the single shot winchester.22 (not a cooey) in my gun safe that they used for Tyd majority of their butchering, some of those beef cattle were 2000lbs plus, only one shot on a animal.stone dead every time.I don't underestimate the .22 lr one bit.

Since Reagan has been mentioned twice or more I think I should point out that everyone shot that day was hit by bullets containing impact sensitive explosives. Ironically they seemed to have limited the damage since none exploded and were likely lighter to accommodate the Lead Azide.

There are many different 22lr rounds available, some able to travel at over 1,700 f/s. I like CCI Velocitor, they also offer a quiet one but that one has no powder in it and only around 600 f/s.

Chose your rounds wisely.

Almost a century back, the mayor of Chicago, I believe, was shot and killed in the middle of a parade, while sitting in an open car.

At first they thought it was an assassination, but couldn't figure out why, because he was very popular.

It turned out he was killed by a bullet fired from a 22rf, single shot rifle, being used by kids target shooting, on a rooftop, over 500 yards away.
