How important is a Vent-rib to you

I say it is important enough NOT to have one. Saves me about 12 oz of extra weight.

A vent rib makes it easier to shoot a shotgun effectively. It helps your brain line up things even if you're not conciously doing it It also allows a lot quicker target acquisition and just looks better on a shotgun. Plus vent rib guns are easier to sell for more dollars.

a vent rib is handy for swatting wounded ducks, braining turkey and shooting slugs and buck shot.
Have to agree 3macs1.remove the bead from a plain barrel and a vent rib barrel and see which you one you shoot better with.

Of course a gun will function fine without one but it does indeed help with the sighting plane. And it does look better and yes it helps with resale. Whether one wants to admit it or not, if a gun is for sale without a rib the first thought is often, " oh, it doesn't have a vent rib". Plus the majority of shooters who are used to a vent rib would not really care to go back to a plain barrel. I said most, not everyone.

Dave, that A 5 may not look super cool ( I beg to differ) but shoot it with the Poly and watch what happens. If that Poly was installed properly and shoots where it points it will be a deadly game gun.

i go out of my way to find non vent rib guns i like the old school look and if its got some blue wear well that just gives it character

Vent rib is a "must have" critical element on a single barrel, O/U, pump or auto-loader for me, or at least a raised solid rib. On a SxS, I don't much care for a swamped rib, but prefer a slightly raised flat filed rib ... and got a long fine with a vent rib on a Mod. 21.
Like the Auto-5's and have confidence in them ... just can't shoot one, vent rib or not.

I just bought this A-5 with some sort of poly-choke. I may get another barrel. I will see how it handles first though.

That is a neat A-5. I have a few buddies with plain barrel A-5s, they all like them. Also a few with Ithaca M37s for hunt guns, and they think they are perfect. I occasionally used my M37 riot gun on decoyed ducks - it was a hoot to use on close range ducks.
I typically prefer using shotguns with vent ribs, but a shotgun like your A-5 would be fun too.
I can't find any difference in my ability to shoot a vent or non-vented rib shotgun. Gun fit is most important in a shotgun and if either configuration fits the gun will shoot where you look. As to the rib being a good sighting plane, in my limited experience of 40 years of shotgunning, if you see the rib then in all likelihood your doomed to miss behind.
