A vent rib makes it easier to shoot a shotgun effectively. It helps your brain line up things even if you're not conciously doing it It also allows a lot quicker target acquisition and just looks better on a shotgun. Plus vent rib guns are easier to sell for more dollars.

dont really need one
Of course a gun will function fine without one but it does indeed help with the sighting plane. And it does look better and yes it helps with resale. Whether one wants to admit it or not, if a gun is for sale without a rib the first thought is often, " oh, it doesn't have a vent rib". Plus the majority of shooters who are used to a vent rib would not really care to go back to a plain barrel. I said most, not everyone.

I just bought this A-5 with some sort of poly-choke. I may get another barrel. I will see how it handles first though.
