How important is a Vent-rib to you

I can't find any difference in my ability to shoot a vent or non-vented rib shotgun. Gun fit is most important in a shotgun and if either configuration fits the gun will shoot where you look. As to the rib being a good sighting plane, in my limited experience of 40 years of shotgunning, if you see the rib then in all likelihood your doomed to miss behind.
OMHO.
Cheers/luck

Do you shoot trap, skeet or clays if so try it and I will garantee you will pick up your scores. We didnot send our barrels to simmions back in the day to have the ribs fitted to look pretty on the skeet field. It makes a difference buy hey some guys are happy shooting low 90's not me.

Yep, I do shoot trap, skeet and sporting clays (30 years) -- I shoot gun down/low gun and I do win tournaments against the lads that shoot up gun.
Reading and talking to shooting coaches has confirmed that you point a shotgun and don't aim it.
Cheers.

My target guns have vented ribs.
I prefer solid ribs on my hunting guns. They are not currently fashionable, but they work as well as a vent rib and don't collect crud and rust when hunting. I have a Merkel O/U and a Kreighoff drilling so equipped. If I could have a solid rib on other hunting guns I would do so, but a rib is not really essential to good field shooting.

Good to hear. It is all about what ever you are comfortable with but I still think you may pick up a few extra birds with VR vs plain.
Shooting gun down is no biggy for me that is how I started in the 60's and still do it today again all about what you are comfortable with and most important is having fun.
That is why all my high end target guns are gone and I pretty well shoot a 870 28ga wingmaster for everything. take care.

Definitely a shotgun is a pointing gun, but I always like a rib for looks and cleaner, quicker target aquisition.

But when you get to skill level and experience that "3macs1, Grouser" and I have it is all irrelevent, as we shoot most everything from the hip now!;)

I started off with a VR Mossberg, then tried a Win M12 and Ithaca 37 without the VR. The receivers on both guns have a groove milled down the top of the receiver that acts as a plane for the eye to view down the gun, and if the gun fits you, you see the bead floating at the end, and you don't see any part of the barrel at all with your eye. So no, VR shouldn't technically make a difference in sighting, but for heat dissipation yes. JMB designed his guns like this so the rib is redundant and extra weight. That is why the Auto 5 has the hump-back receiver which forms an extremely easy flat plane for your eye to look down the milled groove in the receiver onto the bead at the end of the barrel. Also notice that the grooves on the receivers have lines similar to those found on vent ribbed barrels, which help reduce glare from ambient light and mirage effect. These lines are also seen on front sight ramps as well. However, this is the technical aspect of the argument, the more important determining factor is the nut behind the trigger. If the perceived advantage of a VR makes him more confident and swing better, then he breaks more birds. Also, a VR adds weight to a barrel, so a barrel may swing smoother being more front heavy. More food for thought...

Just wondering these shooting coaches you talked to . How many of them are shooting non vent ribbed shotguns????
In fact next time you are at the club or a tournament try to find one other than maybe yours.
Like I say to each their own, it works for you great but that is not the norm. I had simmons fit two back in the day when we shot non vent ribbed and noticed a difference and have not heard anyone say they didnot pick up a few birds back then when we shot both styles.

I don't know how anyone can shoot a browning auto 5 vr or not. I have one and love the gun but I can't shoot it to save my life. All I see is that back of the damn receiver
I've actually shot both ribbed and non ribbed without a end bead and shot just the same in skeet. Trap I prefer a vr but don't need one

Check gun fit?

Since it doesn't work for you, I'll give you $20 for it ;)

Took my new 20ga. Wingmaster out for 6 rounds of trap yesterday, first time I'd shot trap in more than a decade. Fixed/modified choke, plain barrel.

Shot high teens for the first 4 rounds, then broke 22 on each of the 2 last rounds. I'm more than a little rusty, but that strikes me as being pretty decent for a field gun...and my first outing with it! :) Would I rather it had a VR barrel? Won't lie...the answer to that is "yes". However, as mosinmaster pointed-out, the top of my Remington receivers is milled like the one he has pictured in his post, so provided the bead was centered in that (and I did my part) it was one broken bird after another. I'd lean more to what MM said about the guy behind the trigger being a bigger part of the success than the VR barrel.

Six rounds of trap sounds a bit punishing to me:eek:. My scores generally tend to drop off a bit toward the end if I plan on burning a hundred rounds of ammo in one evening. Has a bit to do with fatigue on my part I feel. Further, with light conditions getting poor later on, my eyes are not what they once were:(.

Once more though, I shoot all my 16 yard with a M12 Winchester trap gun:cool:. One ounce of #8 shot at 1235 fps. Rib is vital IMO as in the summer way too much heat comes off a plain barrel which most certainly will result in dropped birds for me:redface:.

Only "punishing" part was that I shot the last 2 rounds with only one other shooter! :) Couldn't feed the shells fast enough shooting singles with a pump.

Had gone expecting to shoot 3-4 rounds, but the club was quiet. 20ga. is a little easier on the shoulder than my 12 is. I was shooting Winchester AA Heavy Target Load, 1oz. of #8.
