How long does a S&W 629 last? Let's find out! 13K+ now

7864rds Didn't leave the house on Sunday due to tequila related issues but went to the range this morning with a friend. Fired all 300rds of .44 consisting of 100 each many times fired Federal brass with 21.5gr and 22.0gr of IMR4227 powder, Campro 240gr TMJ's and CCI300 primers. The difference in powder is because of the new lot that I'm into now. 10 1lb bottles dumped into the empty 8lb jug and shaken up. It just averages a bit heavier. 50rds of the usual Starline, 23.6gr H-110 with the same Campro's and primers. Then 50 uber-hot Starline with 30.8gr of H-110 under 180gr Nosler 180gr JHC's and CCI primers. These are spectacular! Huge noise and fireball and a major impact on the body, 100 of these would be unpleasant. And then a bunch of 9mm, 5.56 and some .40 for filler, although my friend fired most of it. He's not a fan of the .44 at all.

Most impressive from a physical standpoint. I fired 200 rounds of my max loaded 240 grain pills yesterday, and my hand/wrist was pounded! I had more ammo and stopped due to the unpleasantness of ever successive round fired.
So never mind the gun, for me the question is how many rounds before I give up!:) I find that I can shoot SA all day (if ammo allowed),but DA literally pounds the joints to the point of "this isn't fun anymore" ;)

I rarely shoot DA as I'm not good enough to stay on target, shooting SA I get waaaay better grouping. Even impressed myself a bit today, didn't last long though.

8160rds And the weirdness continues with another 296 rounds today, 246 of 17 times fired (yes, really) Federal brass with 22.6gr of IMR4227, Campro 240gr TMJ's and 146 with WLP, the other 100 with CCI300 primers. And 50 of 3 times Starline brass. 23.6gr H-110 and the same Campro and CCI300. And 150rds of .45ACP and 185rds of max loaded .223 (subject of a different thread)

Tweaked the sights today and what a difference, some of the best groups I've ever done. Another few thousand rounds and I might be able to move from "terrible" to just "bad".

There seems to be a lot of unburned powder with this batch of IMR4227, so some experimentation is in order. Different charge weights and some magnum primers coming up.

Did notice a touch of flame cutting on the underside of the top strap when cleaning yesterday, will look closer and get some pics later.

The chambers and entry of barrell :)

Verily, ask and ye shall receive - after 296 rounds today, no cleaning at all so a lot of what looks like damage just wipes off. I'll clean it tomorrow and post up a couple of after pics:

Cleaned up, there is some very slight erosion at the edge of the forcing cone but it's pretty minor. The biggest issue is that the grips are all broken. No wonder they were loose. The plastic has broken around the lower locating pin and the boss that holds the nut has cracked. Guess I'll be wrapping this fine piece of equipment with tape so I can use it until I find another set of grips. More of that famous Smith & Wesson "quality".
