How Many 358 Winchester Fans Have We Got Here??

Hoyt........weren't you having a 77 RSI done out to a 358..........How did that turn out, got pics? That would make a good stable mate for my RSIs in 243 and 308.

Your memory is good, but that project got scrapped for the current one... I tried to convince Lipsey's to do a run of RSI's in .358... but they said Ruger was disinclined to use the RL profile for a .358 bore. I have a BLR, Frontier and the M77 MKII Stainless custom underway. This project is rebarrelling a .308 to .358 to go with my MKII stainless .243 and .308.

This has become my fav my grab and go hunter - a Ruger77 Frontier in 358Win. Took it out west elk and deer hunting last fall. Very handy and it just suits me right down to the ground. I took off the quarter rib and use a compact 1.5-4 power Leupold over the receiver usually. It spits 250s at just over 2200 with its short 16" barrel. I also have a full size Ruger77 Hawkeye Stainless and a Savage "Brush Gun" - both in 358Win - both great hunting rifles also.

That's a nice rugged looking little thumper,... must be a nice handy one to carry aswell.

I wish Winchester would do a Model 70 Featherweight Compact in .358

Yes that would be a great little rifle,..... I think if some of the gun manufactures would chamber a couple of there rifles, (Winchester FW/ FW Compact,.. Browning X-Bolt/ X-Bolt Micro, BAR, Remington Model 7, Tikka,.. etc), in 358 once in awhile it might help make this great little cartridge more popular,.. atleast we have the BLR, and Ruger still putting one out once in awhile,.. Ruger must be selling them all right or they wouldn't keep making runs of them.

How much of an advantage does the 358 have over the 35 Rem?

Kind of like comparing the 30-30 to the 308...

Here is an example....

.358 Win. (200gr)... Muz Vel. 2490,....... Muz Eng. 2753.

.35 Rem. (200gr)... Muz Vel. 2080,....... Muz Eng. 1921.

The 358win at 200 yards almost matches ballistics of what the 35rem is doing at the muzzle.

I have a new stainless 700 BDL action here (not SPS) and a new McMillan Edge that would be perfect for a project like this. Was thinking about selling/trading but this thread gets me thinking otherwise.

If I had that action and stock I wouldn't hesitate,.. you're 2/3s of the way there,.. add a 18"-22" bbl, and you've got yourself a great bolt action 358win,... handy deer, bear, moose rifle.

I picked up a used pistol grip BLR stainless in 358 with reloading package 3 weeks ago. Haven't shot it yet and I don't reload so shipped in 4 boxes of Hornady 200gr SP - the first bullet I pulled out of the factory box is headstamped 243 Win. I checked all other rounds and that is the only one stamped incorrectly. Anybody else ever see that? I have pics but have not learned to post yet since photobucket changed.

LOL ...... I think I used to own that rifle and sold it BACK to Ted after a time. Should have kept it.

While I don't own one right now, have owned 4 or 5 over the years. The best one was a M760 in 35Remington that was rechambered. The Model Seven mentioned above, a custom SS 700 and a couple BLRs. None currently as I have a 35Whelen instead.

SS.......is that 35 Win in a mod 95 I assume ? I too have one of these, easy to equal 358 Win ballistics, beautiful and useful old cartridge and doesn't have the restrictions of most 358 magazines.
That 350 RUM is a hellfire breathing dragon, buddy of mine used one for many years (35-404 Imp), biggest problem then was getting good enough bullets for it. 250 Speer HC were varmint bullets when used in that cartridge at 3200 fps.

On point, I have a 358 Win which I bought from Ted (Why Not?) made up on an old wood stocked Mod 7. However I have never shot any game with it and my #2 son has laid claim to it as his favorite rifle. I do have several 35 cal rifles and have used the 350 RM extensively for laying down black bears. As stated earlier it kills them all out of proportion to it's paper ballistics.........I used to sneer at guys using the 350 RM before I traded for one and started using it, I suspect the same applies to the 358 Win.

funny that you mentionned our Ted. i saw for the first time a rifle and reloaded ammo in 358 in his place. seems that rifle was doing her duty every year ...

243 headstamp on 358, lol,.. nope never saw that before,.. be a good keepsake and conversation piece though.

You should give reloading a try,.. I enjoy it myself, probably enjoy making ammo as much as I enjoy shooting it,... plus the 358win is very easy to handload,.. good selection of 35cal bullets to choose from, and 358 brass can easily be made from 308 brass with just one pass through the die,.... either way, factory ammo or handloads,.. I bet you will like the 358win.

For posting pics I switched to Imgur,.. I like it much better.

Well, I got 160 Nosler brass pieces (once fired), 225 Interlock 200gr SP's, 300 Interlock 200gr RN's, 2 sets of dies and a proven recipe for the gun so could go that route, but will likely sell it off, or get a friend I only see once or twice a year to reload for me. I'll see if Imgur works later and post a pic.

"shotcup",..I guess you figured out the picture thing,..lol

Yup you're right,.. that old reloading stuff aint no good to you,.. I would give it away to some other nice fellow Canadian Gunnuter so it wasn't laying around collecting dust,.... my mailing address is PO BOX.... lol... just kidding.
Unless you really need the money for something else you should hang on to that stuff,.. that's a nice box of gear,... you may wish you had kept it in the end,.. you sure won't be able to replace it for the same money you will get for selling it. But anyway,.. if you want to donate it to me my mailing address is just a PM away,.. lol.

Oh,.. and nice rifle by-the-way.

I owned and sold an original steel-frame BLR many years ago; terrific gun...but the new aluminium-frame one I have now is hands-down more accurate with every load I've tried in it. Not just a bit more accurate; a lot more. The steel gun was essentially a 2 or 2.25 MOA gun with almost any 200 or 250gr load I tried. The newer gun is MOA with some loads, and 1.25MOA with many. Plus...it's a take-down! :)

Super-compact for transportation in a vehicle, accurate and out to 250 yards or so it's very capable on...what does Hangfire call it?...oh, yeah..."heavy game" out to 250 yards or so. Hard not to like a gun like that.
