How many AR15's and Variants in Civilian Hands?

I can't remember off hand but when someone posted the restricted registry info a few years ago it was something like: 900,000 registered firearms and of those around 800,000 of those were pistols. So if those numbers are even somewhat accurate, and assuming the AR-15 is the most popular restricted rifle in Canada (I dunno, but I'm pretty sure it is) I'd hazard a guess that there are less than 100,000 of them in the country.

As to where the info could be found on actual numbers, I think the only place you'd get it is from the CFP.

Maybe rangebob has some info on this in his bag of tricks. You've got me curious now too OP.

Judging by the petitiom going around... Less than 25k...

I really doubt that is even remotely accurate. Not every AR-15 owner comes to a site like this where they would see the petition. Even the ones that do may not sign it, especially if they own shorties that would never be non-restricted.

Don't get me wrong, I signed it and I think all gun owners should but not everyone cares about rocking the boat.

I can't afford a complete rifle at the moment, but I can afford a stripped lower. Since in the eyes of the law that's the rifle, I'll be the proud owner of an AR-15 (to my door for just over $200) once the transfer is approved, ARRR!

As for the petition, what we need to do is have a few marches on Ottawa, and none of that crazy "out of my dead hands" BS. We need to get big numbers, no camo, and no nut jobs exercising their right to walk around with a long arm. We need to sway the public, not public servants. If we all show up in Golf Shirts and Casual Slacks it'll be that much harder to paint us as Wacko's.

Unfortunately Antis might show up wearing camo, etc to make us look bad. Or they might try some provocateur crap. How do we counter this?

The police have a history of doing this sort of thing, I doubt "antis" would, but it could happen. If it was well organized and we as a group were disciplined it could have an impact. You'll never change everyone's opinion, but you could change a fair number I'd bet, assuming we could look like what we are, average citizens.

It was more of a joke/kick at the bucket comment than an actual act but you are right about everything else.

I own a shorty (10.3") and a 16" but would build a 18" in an heartbeat should the become unrestricted. Unfortunatly, a lot of people wont sign because they dont believe in it, dont want to put their "precious info" on a petition or any other "good reason" I've heard...
And there is the "dont need/want one so #### it" crew...

Gotta love our community...

I'd build or buy a 20" barrel Upper in a heartbeat if they became NR.

The saddest part is that allowing this farce to continue only allows them to restrict our rights further.

The Canadian Firearms Program has the information for all registered Restricteds and Prohibited. Go big and submit an Access to Information request for $5. Request the total number of all registered semi-automatic rifles in .223 and 5.56; then request breakdown by maker and start sorting the returns. There are so many boutique makers that only asking for the Colts, Bushmasters and DPMs will only give you part of the answer.
