I always keep a box of factory ammo somewhere tucked away in my truck for each rifle I bring , just in case .
then for the backup rifle I have a couple boxes of handloads , many times these are several years old as they don't get used as they are meant for hunting , nothing else.
then my main rifle , generally 40 to 60 rounds of handloads are in the truck ..... on my person , while hunting , 5 in the magazine , 2 in my left breast pocket and 5 in each back pocket .
a person may only need a couple to take down the animal ..... but now your covered in blood , and I have been stalked by grizzly's several times , once with only 2 rounds in the magazine .
I also don't mix and match ammo for hunting , my handloads are all the same , I don't subscribe to the notion of some round loaded for deer , other for moose .
same with factory ammo, it is all the same , many times from the same lot .
