How many cartridges for a big game hunt?

We got a 5 deer possession limit and 15 dog deer's over all ,so 5 rounds is the bare minimum
Its depends on hunting style and where you're hunting as ammo availability is just as important as to how much ammo you take hunting

WOouldnt it be 3 deer( a mule, white tail and doe of either) plus 5 little guys(15 total), for 18 on the year? Ive never looked into how the 6-12,13 deer limits affect provincial limits, if they in fact even do.

You mean a long story to say "don't shoot through brush"? Seeing as the buck was walking slowly, your father had plenty of time to be sure it was clear before unloading on the deer. Not exactly an "uncontrollable factor" and was a dumb decision in my mind as this could have easily resulted in a wounded deer.

Gone are the days of making the first shot count...

How long you been hunting junior?

My father has killed more animals with one shot (each) than you are likely to see in your entire hunting career... and for that matter I would be willing to bet that I have taken more game with one ARROW (each) than you will see in your hunting career... the brush was "unseen" or he wouldn't have squeezed the trigger... it happens... and a lot crazier shyte than that will happen over a hunting career... get off your high and sanctimonious horse.

It happens....... I hunt in 62 and 65...... In 65 we can't use rifles.......

I used to hunt with string and stick often and took 6 whitetails cleanly that way...... But I no longer have the time or area to feel "proficient" like I was........

I lost what would have been the biggest deer of my hunting "career" after a shotgun shot....... I can even provide pics from my trail cam..... Ten pointer..... It was heartbreaking and the sad part is that I made what I thought was a good shot with my shotgun and the trail looked like someone carried a bleeding red Paint can through the woods, but it backtracked on itself several times.....

Long story short, if you have never lost one, you haven't hunted enough to have an Opinon...

I don't know too be honest I haven't hunted mainland deer since I was a kid just know it's 15 a year limit
If you ever tasted Haida Gwaii dog deer you would understand there soo tender and tasty

OP here.

Well, I went and re-sighted in the rifle with factory ammo but of course I blew off half a box getting it where i wanted at 100 metres, then checking at 200 and shooting it at 25 and 50 yards too.

So I've got 10 new factory loads left, plus another five of the same brand kicking around somewhere so now I have over twice as many as the six handloads I had to start with.

You like cutting it close...

Figure out what your hunt is going to cost you... I am betting that a couple boxes of ammo is less than 5% of the total... but represents a huge portion of succeeding in you quest... it is bad economy to cut the corners you are cutting.

Yeah's what's another $50.00?

Not even a tank of gas.

I always keep a box of factory ammo somewhere tucked away in my truck for each rifle I bring , just in case .

then for the backup rifle I have a couple boxes of handloads , many times these are several years old as they don't get used as they are meant for hunting , nothing else.

then my main rifle , generally 40 to 60 rounds of handloads are in the truck ..... on my person , while hunting , 5 in the magazine , 2 in my left breast pocket and 5 in each back pocket .

a person may only need a couple to take down the animal ..... but now your covered in blood , and I have been stalked by grizzly's several times , once with only 2 rounds in the magazine .

I also don't mix and match ammo for hunting , my handloads are all the same , I don't subscribe to the notion of some round loaded for deer , other for moose .

same with factory ammo, it is all the same , many times from the same lot .

Its been a dream hunt of mine, I went to the islands as a kid and always wanted to come back to hunt. Waiting a few years for the kid to get a little older so I can take her, hopefully it sticks with her as it did for me. 20 years later I'm still thinking about the beauty of place.

It will take there is so much opportunity with the dog deer it's the perfect plase to introduced your daughter to hunting I would fist start here out hunting grouse just to get here comfortable with hunting but she will love it

Me and the gf took turns carring her in a backpack style baby carrier while we hunted grouse last year. She's well on her way, she likes the "gowse" :) Some of the best hunting memory's I have.

The best thing about Haida Gwaii dog deer is you do t need a big rifle you can give your daughter a pocket full of 22 hornet or 223 is a nice easy transition from a 22LR
Hunting with kids you need plenty of ammo haha
