How many different handguns do Canada's Police, Border Officers, Military, etc, Use ?

Wicker Police do you think S&W will try to get their M&P in front of the RCMP if and when the force decides to retire their existing pistol? S&W has been the forces handgun supplier almost since the force was formed. I would think they would almost give their pistols to you to get the contract.

Take Care

Bob

Today I tried the M&P I recently got. Great gun, and accurate. The APEX internals make a huge difference to the trigger and reset compared to the compacts I've been playing around with. It came with the Crimson Trace laser grips though, and didn't have the factory back straps. Any idea where I can find the different sized ones so I can see if the smaller sizes fit my hands better? And once I get a holster for it, I think I'm going to try it in a match....

And Bob, I think it's a good bet that they would throw the M&P in the ring when there's a new trial. And I'd be happy if we did go to the M&P. It's a great gun. I'd also be happy with the Glock 17, or HK P30.

But I think we're stuck with the 5946 for a while. Which isn't that bad. As a general duty and patrol pistol for uniform members, it's a great gun as well.

It would be nice to move into the modern age though.... Which is starting with specialized units going back to the Sig.

But with budgets shrinking and being cut anywhere possible, and fiscal restraint the current trend, I can't see us making a large scale change like that any time soon.

They also need to move to a different holster and newer technology. The 070 is a great holster but is an old design.

It will be interesting to see what the RCMP does when they do decide to go to a new pistol, but you can bet S&W will be front and center. As for holsters, like you said the 070 is a fantastic design and continues to be a popular choice even with it's 25+ year old technology. Sure, there are better holsters available, but transitioning 18,000 or so coppers to a new holster would not be an easy undertaking, even done with a pistol transition. Unless they intended to issue tactical light's with a new system, it may be just as easy to stick with what people know and are comfortable with. I was surprised that VPD stuck with the 070 when they went to SIG, but the rationale at the time was, they weren't putting lights on the guns, so why complicate matters with a new holster.

I've seen first hand both pistol transitions (Beretta to Glock) using the same holster, and also holster transitions in conjunction with issuing under gun lights. For some of the, shall we say... less dedicated personnel, it can be a challenge.

I'd quit.

Or carry my Glock when I could get away with it. :p

The Mounties carrying Glocks! Now you're talkin'.... ;) :D

OK, enough of that, I'm sure they know better.
One thing that CBSA got right is the holster, Safariland ALS, great holster, disappointing firearm. BTW NRPS has just transitioned to the Safariland ALS as well. They are however carrying a real police sidearm the G22!!

WP I wish I could lend ya my G26! or G19! Hell I wish I could carry either!! :) Cheers

Glock was one of the few guns that passed the "freeze test" at Depot. They left the guns outside for a long time in the cold and then tried to shoot them. Glock passed no problem, many other did not. They dumped it early on though and picked the S&W.:(

Alaska State Troopers tested a whole bunch of assault rifles in the cold, most failed the test and would not function. All the AK variant rifles passed (Valmet, Galil) no surprise there.

thanks dude, keyboard is now covered in cranberry juice!

RCMP carrying Glocks? no, never. ;)
