I've got me a good little collection, but every now and again the wifey gives me that look when I'm gettin' set to by a new boom-stick. So I'm am going to pass along my redneck logic so you guys can use it too....I need certain firearms for certain jobs (wife don't know about crossover, bullet design, and reloading).
1 target practice, plinking- one quality bolt action .22
2 varmit, target, -one rifle .223-.260 caliber
3 general hunting- one rifle .270-.30 caliber, one back-up rifle same or similar
(what if your scope gets bumped or a friend shows up?)
4 large game- one rifle .30 mag - what ever is huge and cool, one back-up
5 migratory birds/ turkey- 12 ga , pick your poison what size or action, one
one spare for buddies
6 small game/ upland birds- .410-20 ga. I have a SxS does it for me.
Now you can effectively have atleast 9 rifles. Not to mention a couple of handguns because if you don't buy them now who knows if you'll be allowed to in the years to come. Milsurp is an easy one- it's a part of history how can you not own several.

Hope this logic helps you guys, it atleast gets my wifey to roll her eyes and leave me be....

The only guns you have to have... .22LR; .270/.308/.30-06; 12ga shotgun, everything else is optional.

BUT it goes without saying that once you have the 3 mandatory guns, then you start filling out the missing calibers. .223 to .600NE.

I could see myself getting a double in .500NE or .600NE someday. All I need is money... :(

That'll cover the gunrack in the truck but what do keep in the house?

22LR - bolt action & a semi
medium range varmint/target gun - HMR/Hornet/etc
long range varmint/target gun - 22-250/243/etc
small big-game (cxp2 deer) gun - 25-06/270/7mm08/etc
large big-game (cxp3 moose/elk) - 338/Whelen/etc
dangerous game (cxp4) - 45-70/458/375/etc
shotgun

if you really want to cut back on stuff i would say

22 lr
30-06
12 g

30-06 is amazing on what it can be loaded with , small, big no problem

but i just get 2 of everything but that just me

22lr semi if it is a pliker it might as well be fun (ok funner)
204 ruger (like Coyote and Varmint hunting too much)
338 WM (for any big game in North America)
12 GA (for all else)

If limited to one gun it be the 12 ga but it would include a rifled slug barrel.

My ex-wife gave me that look once too often... shoulda seen the look on her face when the door hit her in the ass on the way out!
Listen up fellas or at least you guys that have not heard me rant about justifying your gun needs to your wife/girlfriend/significant pain in the ass!
If your partner is giving you grief about your chosen hobby then GROW A SET OF BALLS AND FIRE HER!
Life is too damn short to live it making excuses to a woman instead of enjoying what you love. There are a limited number of firearms and hunting seasons in your life... but there is an unlimited number of women out there. Do the math!
I'm serious.

ask her why she needs so many pairs of shoes.should be end of debate

I did. She said when payless starts selling pistols for $30 I can have as many as I want so STFU.

As far as I care, I need one in every caliber, one of each for a friend and two of everything I think that looks pretty. My wife knows if she doesn't like it, she will have to deal with it. I'll spend my money on what I want and I still provide for her everything she needs and then some.

A 22 rimfire, a 223, a really lightweight hunting rig in 260-308 for deer only, a major hunting gun to use on moose etc or when shots could be long or on a mixed bag mine is a 300 win, and a shotgun. I don;t hunt waterfowl so for me it's a nice SXS 20 guage. I am thinking of a 375, I'll use that mostly for talking my wife into letting me go/helping me pay for another trip to Africa.

I don't care to own handguns, and a target rifle would be nice, but 6 will do it...damn I'm already over.

It's always nice to blow the rust out of the barrel. So to speak. LOL! But don't comprimise who you are. I did. It got me two fantastic kids and a divorce (in progress)
