How Many Magazines?

For IPSC 5 on the belt and 1 in the gun, minimum. But you can never have too many mags

I like six. I rarely go to my sixth mag but it's nice to have an extra if you have a malfunction, drop the mag you went for and don't want to have to pick it off the ground, shot way more shots than you expected or change mags to get back on plan if you make a mistake.

shot my first USPSA match today I had 5 magazines on my person, only used 4 but it was nice having that 5th one just in case. I also used it as a top-up magazine too.

For IPSC, I like to have at least 7, 1 used as a 'topper', and 6 useable. That is at a minimum to get you by. You have to remember, you ALWAYS need one mag to top up, so that takes away from your useable mags. Plus it never hurts to have spares on top of what you normally would use. I have been to matches where it was pouring, and my mags were sometimes dropped in mud where there was no time to clean them properly. If you have ten, you should be all set.

Enough mags to hold one whole box of ammo. So 5 for most pistols [7 or 8 for a .45 1911]. At least 4 for most semi-auto CF rifles.

There are all kinds of rationales for various numbers, but that's mine. Typically I have lots more...mags get damaged, worn out, lost, loaned to pals and not received back...etc.

In IPSC, 5 magazine pouches, 5-6 magazine is good enough.
It will be very difficult to reach to the 6th magazine pouches on belt even you need to. A miss is 15 down, when I need to reach my 5th magazine, I know I am going to get a very low hit factor if not "0".
One stage required is max 32 rounds, and each position max shoot is 9 rounds.
1 to 2 reload is most of the stages require.
Have 5-6 magazine available is more because of we shoot 2 stages hot.
Hope this help.
Have fun with IPSC.

So I'm currently waiting on the transfer to go through on a Glock 22. So what else would I do while I wait, but buy some parts for it of course. It comes with 3, and I know for IPSC they say you need at least 4, but what's the general consensus around these parts? How many mags do you have for your pistols and why?

For IPSC, where you'll face 32 round stages, with targets of varying presentations, if you have four magazines you'll be able to carry enough ammunition to complete any stage...provided that you don't miss much. Five magazines give you the ability to reload before the pistol goes dry, so you would be able to choose a better time to reload (than when you're using only four). Six magazines give you that ability, plus the insurance of having an extra on your belt in case you make an error during a reload, dropping a magazine in the process...if you have a spare on your belt, it's no sweat.

I consider five magazines and three pouches to be the bare minimum for IPSC. More is better.
