I am in the process of getting my AR and all the goodies which accompany it and I was wondering how many mags you guys usually bring with you to a service rifle/CQB shoot? Would six mags be sufficient or would you recommend more? Thanks.

For CQB I use 5 x 5/30 AR mags and 2 pistol mags.

For SR, the new matches 1-4, I use 6 x 5/30 and 4 x 10 LAR mags. It's tight, though. I need to reload in matches 3 and 4 after the sighters and deliberate. Having your ammo on stripper clips makes it easy to charge up mags and there is enough time to do it. There is some planning as to what to use for each stage but with some advance planning you can make it work. I have everything color coded as to what to use and when.

That is for the Ontario program that I shoot anyway, matches are run differently in other provinces and organisations.

It's been a while, and I'm going from memory, but for matches 1-12, I believe it is 3 x 5/30 mags. You just charge the mags at the end of each match. On the run downs, I just stuck the extra mag in the back pocket of my pants.

Having a spare is always a good thing too!

For matches 1-4 I bring along 10 x 5/30 rd Pmags and 2 coupled pairs of LAR 10 rd .223 pistol mags for the match 2.3 and match 2.4 stages (time is tight for the 10 rd exposure).

For matches 1-16, I'll be keeping 3 x 5/30 rd mags. Nice and easy!

Like maritimer, for Service CQB at Langemark Range in Borden, I keep 5 x 5/30rd rifle and only 2 x 10 rd pistol magazines.

Hope this helps!

Wait a second how is one to carry 10 M14s mags? My vest only has 5 and the one in the rifle? I would rather only use 6 mags and re bomb them. Ten seems like a lot but is that because the way of the 5 rnd limit? Ar mags their are vests that do it and the ammo is much more smaller and mags smaller.

Hungry here: In Matches 1-16, you got loads of time to bomb them up. In Matches 1-4, it's a very intense experience! Kinda like the flow of 'conflict'
;) .... enough said.

ranger_scout,

If the mags don't fit on the vest... there's always

Personally, I find it easier to grab a fresh magazine than try to reload them.

If you're wearing cargo pants, carry a handful of rounds, and each time you find yourself standing around, or listening to instruction, be loading. Stripper clips are fine, but especially for .223, I find it's just as convenient to have a handful in a pocket. That way, you're reloading as you walk, talk, listen, etc, instead of making reloading "the" task you're working on.

I like the idea of having a ton of mags though... gotta buy more. Enough to get me through till lunchtime, anyway :)

Not for me not sure about OP i have a scope in the way for clips and have no charger for it yet although probably not a bad idea. I guess i could just run a service rifle once then see what kit i need altered learn by doing type thing.

Do you have stripper clip and a mag charger?

I'm not sure if this was asked to me, but yes I have mag chargers and lots of stripper clips. I'm just not sure that I would want to be loading mags when I should be paying attention to direction or other things. Of course I say this having never participated in a service rifle or CQB match  so for all I know there could be ample time to do it while not missing anything.

I currently have six 5/30 Pmags and one 10 round LAR, but I think that number would have to grow before I thought about serious competition. For now, I will just use the CQB info I have gathered (thanks Hungry), and start practicing at my range :)
