Back to the OP's observation, this is one of the things I noticed when I first started in IPSC.
And most of it was with the gamers (vice martial artists) who had these uber expensive guns that were constantly dicking with them.
I started out with an unmodified Argentine Model 1927 1911A1 using my handloads with Wolf's 230 hard cast LRN and NEVER had a wpn or ammunition malfunction, that with shooting well over 10K rounds.
But them gamers sure looked good with their pretty shirts, high speed (and un-reliable) kit and all their pre-stage time wasting IPSC-fu dance rituals. No wonder Jeff Cooper turned on the sport.
