How many of you hunt with single shots?

....well, i really like my number 1a in 9.3x74r. its light , shoots really well with 286 hornadys, and is very pretty to look at. its all good. had a butstock cartrige holder that holds 3 cartriges at an angle made up by levergun leather that lets me get a new cartrige out and into the chamber really fast. just need a number 1a in 7x57 to go with it now. hint, hint. pm me if you have one.

We just got back from elk camp the other day and my partner took a medium cow with a Ruger #1 stainless laminate in 45/70.
He used the Barnes copper hollow points and it looked like some one put a tap on the side of the animal and opened it up. It dropped like a stone.
However before it even hit the groud he was preparing for a second shot, just in case. Its all a frame of mind. If you're prepared to reload, you know your rifle and you have ammo on hand... there should be no problem.

Exactly! If you know you are about to shoot your single shot at game, your reload should already be in your hand.
I've been hunting with a Swede rolling block using 50-70 brass and a 450gr cast bullet.

Filled a doe tag 2 weeks ago with a Ruger #1, laminate stock, stainless steel in 25.06 Remington - one shot throught the heart. Very nice gun - in the first 24 shots fired out of this new gun 3 groups from an inch down to .75 inches were printed on paper with factory ammo. It's a keeper.

I owned these, shot a lot with the 4570 with heavy load, the kind that make you wish you were somewhre else. Accurate, keep asking for more. Never hunted with them.
But sold all of them.

Will really like to get a Browning B78 Traditionnal hunter in 4570GVT.

my yote gun is an H&R single in .204...what's a second shot? 
I have owned and hunted Ruger #1's in the following chamberings: 1A- 7x57; 1AB- 222R, 7x57 & 30-06; 1B- 270, 30-06 & 300 Win Mag; 1H- 375 H&H; 1V-220 Swift & 6mm Remington. Loved them all. No disadvantage in hunting with a single shot rifle as far as I am concerned. Regards, Eagleye.
-I've owned a number of antique & modern single-shots over the years but only decided to try hunting with them on a few occasions in areas that I was familiar with and within the comfortable capabilities of what I carried. Also, this was after years of only firing one shot into whatever critter I was after, mostly deer & bear. In fact the only animal I'd ever fired more than one shot into was a big bull moose in 1995, and after opening him up I saw the heart & figured that I could have held off on the follow-up shot and saved some meat damage; he was dead on his feet anyway. Still, he was down as fast and humanely as I could manage.
-I'd carried a .577 Snider carbine & an Italian .50-70 repro 1874 Sharps carbine over the years, but on the days that I did I never got a chance at a shot that I was confident with. This year due to a problem with the primary rifle I had intended to bring, I ended up carrying a .45-70 Shiloh Sharps carbine for moose. My second round was loaded and ready to fire by the time it was very obvious that the bull I dropped didn't need it. I wouldn't hesitate to take the Sharps or one of my other single-shots out for a lot of the areas that I hunt. Cast bullets from big single shots will do the job as long as the shooter does.

I hunt with a Thompson Centre Omega muzzle loader....single shot. period...yeah I can reload it quickly but not quick enough for a follow up on a miss...
I also hunt with a Thompson Centre Pro Hunter in 7mm-08...love it, it has taken 1 moose and a 1 Mule Deer Buck...
I did own a H&R in .243 after you sqeeze the trigger it would pop open and the case would come half out of the breech on its own. You could slam that baby closed and try to open it it would lock tight, but as soon as you touched the trigger it would open at the shot....SCARY..... I am sure they had a fix for this issue but it was too much of a concern for me...I dumped it...it was an okay shooting gun......a very good friend has the same gun and calibre and had NO issues..."this is my experience".
My opinion...single shots to buy are T/C and Ruger #1's.

that's a pretty big generalization for 1 faulty firearm.I've handled a few H&R singles and have never had a problem...
I've got a Buffalo Classic that likes all kinds of factory ammo and my handloads.
Nice rifle for $450, and real fun to shoot. Only shot one deer with it, but lots of other guns to hunt with too, and I didn't feel hampered by carrying a single shot at all.
350 grain Hornady RN at 1800 fps was mildish (aside the crescent steel butt) and opened up well, and shot into 3" at 100 yards. Considering I was using a 2.5x fixed scope I found that pretty cool.
Only one problem (and reason I used the scope over the irons) was that I ran out of windage on the sight and was still a little off center when shooting it.

So far I hunt small game and predators with them.
Here are some pics.
I blooded this 1910 Remington Model 6 tilting block "boy's rifle" in .22lr on this little rabbit using the iron sights:
Here is my Sportco Martini Hornet topped with a Tasco Mag IV 3-12x40AO and a bunny I bagged with it:
My most commonly used single shot is my sporterised Martini Cadet in 25-20 and it's topped with a Weaver K6.
It'll shoot flat to 100m and a bit further as the following hare and fox found out to their dismay:
I currently have a large frame Martini Enfield that will be re-barreled to 303 again some time in the future and should make a great medium and big game rifle.
I might even have it made into a take down action and get a 577/450 bbl in .458 cal for it as well so I can mess with smokeless load.
But for the moment the little Martini look after the small game and predators well out to reasonable distances.
As the others say, you just have to make that first shot count.
