I have had a few over the years, have two at the moment (I think, maybe three). Still looking for a decent Ruger #1 Int in this caliber. Also have a 7x57 AI on a 98 Mauser, now that I think of it. - dan

I think it's because of the flood of Swede rifles that came into the country years ago that turned everyone on to them including me. My first bolt action was a 1943 Swede Husky full military for $65.

I have a Brno 21H in 7x57 with an original factory scope. I'm the fourth owner of this gun, not counting 3 retailers. The only owner I did not know was the first, it's one of those last to part with guns for me. Good cartridge, a "desirable" gun with some "personal" history - it doesn't get much better. --- John303.
I have one on an old 98 barreled by Ron Smith with a gain twist.24" octagon
I took it out one fall and shot a couple rag tops.It shot so nice I took it apart and built a new stock for it.I really should finish it and put the rifle back together.

I only have one 7x57, a 98 style mauser made by Josef Orasche in 1955. He was a member of the Ferlach guild of master gunmakers in Austria. I couldn't find out too much about him other than he had a long career and made less than 800 guns, mostly double and single shot rifles. He was known for the accurate rifles he made, but not many made it to Canada. When I registered it they told me there were only 2 other of Orasche's on file, a big bore double and an 8x57 mauser. This one is very accurate but I would like to find a no gunsmithing peep site for it. I think it is a Lyman 25. Either that or I'll have to have it drilled and tapped for a scope mount. My close up vision isn't getting any better.

I have two rifles chambered in 7x57, one is an Interarms Mk X mannlicher and the other a Ruger #1 RSI. Still waiting to find the mythical Brno 22F.
Not as much action on this threa as I expected.
I always seem to have a couple, currently 2, one with glass one with irons only:
1) Winchester M70 XTR featherweight with Talley lightweits and a Leup VX-III 2.5-8x36
2) RIGBY Mauser, model III (special lightweight) for the .275 Rigby High Velocity round. c,1929

Mark, there is no way you get away with mentioning that Rigby in this thread and not post pics.
I've owned a few (Brno 21H) and I absolutely love the 7x57 cartridge. It is one of the best out there (especially if you reload) for all North American game (except Polar and Brown bears). The moderate velocities combined with high section density from relatively light bullets = excellent killing power with light recoil. You don't need anything more. I will have another one.

Well, seeing as you like stuff from that era you owe it to yourself to find a M-S and fondle it. IMHO nothing has as smooth and slick an action as a M-S. I've had 3 Brno 21H's and 3 M-S and I would have to say the M-S is a far more refined piece. Not even comparable really. That Rigby though...or an Oberndorf...*drool*...

The Brno's are a nice little gun, but they are in a different class than the M-S or Rigby for certain. Nicely designed other than the high bolt but they can't hold a candle to the two you mention. Brno would be the 'remchester' compared to the 'custom' which is why I am not afraid to use mine. I don't think I could take the other two up to 9000ft on the scree and think it was wise. Heck, I been told I'm crazy taking the Brno!
the FN49 is non restricted, you can use it for hunting.

I've had several 7X57's over the years, but own nary a one at present. My lightweight 280AI renders that kinda pointless; if I buy a 7X57 it will be for the rifle and not the cartridge. Nothing wrong with the 7X57 but it would be redundant. My first was a M77R that I used for several years before I made the move from the right coast to the left coast. Awesome deer rifle. Since then, I have had a Husky lightweight, M700 classic, and several M700's in general mountain rifle configuration.
When the right rifle comes along, meaning #1AB, BRNO, etc I will own one again. How much do I like the 7X57? My absolute pet of pets is a pre-64 fwt 30-06 M70 that Bill Leeper spruced up a bit for me. While he was building it, the hardest part of the process for me was NOT picking up the phone and having him put a 7X57 barrel on it. Even now I think about doing that to it all the time, but it's too nice of a rifle to change. Why Winchester never produced the pre-64 fwt in 257 Roberts and 7X57 I'll never know...
