How much Ammo can we legally own?

from the new regs or about to be the new regs

Propellants:

Current Storage Limit – 10 kg
Proposed Storage Limit (single dwelling unit) - 25 kg propellant af which no more than 10 kg may be black powder + 75 kg in separate storage outside of dwelling with no separation distance
Proposed Storage Limit (multi-dwelling unit) – 5 kg of smokeless or 20 kg smokeless in containers of 1kg or less, 2 kg black powder in bulk in containers of 500 g or less and 3 kg in cartouches and bulk

Primers/Percussion Caps:

Current Storage Limit – “a reasonable quantity” (reasonable is up to the Judge)
Proposed Storage Limit – Unlimited in original packaging – up to 150 "stored" in loading equipment

Ammunition:

Current Storage Limit – “a reasonable quantity” (reasonable is up to the Judge)
Proposed Storage Limit – 225 kg NEQ, i.e., propellant loaded into cartridges*

For some perspective on how fast 225kg or 495lbs adds up:

25kg 880rds 7.62x54r
27kg 1120rds 7.62x39 Czech
29kg 1440rds x39 Chinese
29kg 1000rds 7.62x51 Nato
24.5kg 1000rds 45acp

I thought the explosive regs only concerned the weight of the powder, not the entire cartridge. I recall someone doing the math a while back and it worked out to something like 250 000 rounds of 9mm.

Correct, it's propellant weight and primer weight, not brass or lead.

I suppose if you had proper storage... I mean.. If you had an ammo depot set at the proper distance from any other buildings... With proper fire suppression... And adhering to all required storage regs for dangerous goods.... Limitless?

I think the "limits" or proposed limits have more to do with safety of communities and firefighters I the event of a fire.

I could be wrong.

you prob cant afford the upper limit so dont worry too much about it
if you do get over 200k in ammo then just from a physical size point of view you would prob be looking at keeping that
bulk somewhere other than your basement
200 crates tend to take up a lot of space

I take it you haven't seen the fire fighting video from saami ?

I did not know that it was only weight of powder and primer. Thanks for pointing that out and thanks to the other fellows who also clarified this point.
Sooooo......continue to carry on with your warehousing.:p

Excellent video, a lot better than the one I saw at Factory Mutual's lab a number of years ago in regards to powders and ammo.

So it sounds like SAAMI is a contributor to our ammo shortage then.

225 kg is not NEQ, it is the actual weight of the propellant and primer compound (NEQ is a percentage of the total article weight so for us, actual weight is FAR better as it's only a fraction of the gross weight).

There are 7,000 grains to a pound, 2.2 lbs to a kilo. If you feel you can somehow reach almost 3.5 million grains of propellant and primer in your stash, my hat's off to you!

So my 8400 rounds of 7.62x39(12.5 kilos), 2600 rounds of .223(4.2kilos) and 1900 rounds of 7.62x54r(6kilos) only add up to roughly 23kilos of powder. :( I though it would be more.

Gentleman,
NEQ stands for Net Explosive Quantity. It is NOT a percentage of the weight of the cartridge, it is the ACTUAL weight of explosives IN that cartridge.

Some of you have it right!! That is a crapload of ammo. Far more powder than you are allowed to store otherwise. Hard to understand...I can store 225kg in cartridges, but only 10kg in containers. Isn't a cartridge case just a container?

I work in the explosives industry. NEQ is always taken as a percentage because unless you are the manufacturer, it is impossible to tell exactly how much explosive content is in an article versus dead weight because it varies from product to product. And almost no one provides actual explosive weight for a given article. For 1.4S it is 10% of the gross weight.
